I am having trouble finding an answer of how I could do this.
Basically what I want is to have a program start automatically when it detects that I am using the computer. So for example say I stop using the computer for a few hours and then come back, it would detect this and then open another program or something.
I am looking for a solution in Ruby/python/objective c/Applescript preferably. But anything would work.
I'd like it to work on Snow Leopard.
Any suggestions would be great!
You can monitor all events in the system using NSEvent addGlobalMonitor.... Keep track of the time between two successive events, if it's over a treshold, it means the user was inactive for that time.

I am using the NAO_demo_python controller of the latest version of webots on linux (ubuntu 18) to flash leds and open/close the hands.
However only the last part of the sequences are executed, and not in a single simulation run.
e.g. if i ask to just open the hand and light the leds, after 1 run the lights will be on and after 5 runs of the main while loop it will be opened -reaaallly slowly-. However if i ask lit leds, open hand then close hand unlit leds then the simulation will only close hand and unlit leds.
The code should be working, it is on another person's computer. In case you want it here it is (it's really basic, it's a slight modification of nao-demo-python.py):

Also, something that may be interesting: if i ask to open close the hand N times and each time print something, all the prints will be printed at once and the simulation time jump from 0:0:0 to 0:0:20 after each main loop run (+20 at each run), else, even if the simulation runs the time doesn't flow, it jumps.
I tried to update my drivers, to take off all shadows and stuff from the simulation, as webots advices. No can do. I couldn't find something on Softbank, i can't find an active forum concerning nao and webots anymore...
I have an i5 9th gen and a GTX1050Ti.
May the problem be that the simulation time isn't 1.0x? but at most 0.05x? (after taking off shadows, effect of lights, all objects, using 1 thread etc, as explained here: https://www.cyberbotics.com/doc/guide/speed-performance)
SUMMARY: Only the last sequence of the controller is executed, and if it's a motion it takes several main loops before being fully executed. Meanwhile the time jumps from 0 to +20s after each main loop run.
May someone help me out to make all the sequence work on simulation please :)

It sounds like the setHandsAngle function might be asynchronous (doesn't wait for the hand to move to that point before running the next piece of code)? This could be responsible for at least some of the problems you're experiencing. In this case the rospy.sleep(5) should be replaced with robot.step(5000), so the simulator has time to move the hand before sending the next command.

As it sounds I wanted to create my own kinda smart assistant that can actually unlock my pc (Cortana can't and I could not find any good solution for this).
for now, I have tried multiple ways including messing with winlogon.exe and MSGINA.dll. After about 3 hours of search, I haven't found anything that could actually unlock my pc, and I saw some programs that said that they have succeeded in unlocking their pc while messing around with this files but in reality, it just prevents the locking mechanism and it is not my intention.
right now I have seen some videos about using pyautogui and keyboard to control keyboard and mouse movement and I wrote a small script that can "unfold" the windows lock screen cover (where the time and date is displayed) but nothing more than that (it is not working at all)

I have a tkinter program written in python 3.3.3. I see myself in the need of making the the program get focus when the user unlocks the computer. I don't really know how to go ahead and start with this, users have a .exe version of the program that I created with cxfreeze. I f i need to modify the .py and create another .exe, that wouldn't be a problem.
After some research I found that one can use the ctypes module to lock the computer, but it's not very helpful because i need to know if it is locked or unlocked. I also saw commands from win32com, but i can't seem to be able to find a way to trigger a command when it gets unlocked.
What is the best way to get focus on my program after the computer is unlocked??

I cannot answer this specifically for 'unlock' event (if there even is one in the GUI; I can't find one by cursory search.).
But I think the real answer is to change the question. Having a program simply take focus when user unlocks the display is very un-Windows-ish behavior. The Windows user expects to see the desktop just as s/he left it before the display was locked -- why does s/he want to see your program on top when unlocking, regardless of why Windows might have locked the display?
Maybe you want to recast your program as something that runs in the background and pops up a notification (in the notification area on the right side of toolbar) when it wants user to do something?
I am trying to make some Beep noises with the winsound.Beep command. However when I am using winsound.Beep(500, 500) I do not hear anything. With winsound.MessageBeep and winsound.PlaySound however, I DO get to play sounds. Any ideas what I should do?
What I am trying to do: I want to write a little practicing program for training intervals: the computer sounds a first tone, then a second tone and you will have to guess what the tone interval is. For this I need pitched tones, tones for which I can set the frequency. I want to keep it as simple as possible, any pitched sound will do. I do not want to have to collect a set of .wav files or whatever. I want to make use of a tone generator which I think is available on most soundcards. winsound.Beep seems like something that can do this trick, but any other suggestions are welcome.
I had the exact same problem. winsound.Beep used to work just fine and then it suddenly stopped working (or that's what I thought). The problem was that someone (or some update) had turned off the System sounds, which prevented windows from playing the Beep sound, either manually or through my program. Try right clicking on the Speaker symbol, Open volume mixer and check whether System sounds is off or minimum volume.

Are you sure that your computer has a beep? A lot of recent computer remove the beep because it was annoying and most computer today have soundcard to play wav sound instead (the other sound that you are able to play).
You can also check to validate if it's activated on this page
IMO, I think that using the beep for other things than debugging is not a good idea.

I'd like to know how to have a program wait for another program to finish a task. I'm not sure what I'd look for for that...
Also, I'm using a mac.
I'd like to use Python or perhaps even applescript (I could just osascript python if the solution if for applescript anyway)
Basically this program "MPEGstreamclip" converts videos, and it opens what appears to be 2 new windows while it's converting. One window is a conversion progress bar, and the other window is a preview of the conversion. (Not sure if these actually count as windows)
(Also, MPEGstreamclip does not have an applescript dictionary, so as far as I know, it can't listen for certain window names existence)
But basically I want my program to listen for when MPEGstreamclip is done, and then run its tasks.
If it helps, when the conversion is done, the mpegstreamclip icon in the dock bounces once. I'm not sure what that means but I'd think you could use that to trigger something couldn't you?

I realized GUI applescript was the answer in this scenario. With it I could tell the PROCESS to get every window, and that worked. However, I'm leaving this up because I'd like to know other ways. I'm sure this GUI workaround won't work for everything.
If the MPEGstreamclip actually ends when it is done, you could wrap the whole thing up in a python script using various techniques already discussed in another post. Just be sure to wait for the external process to end before continuing with your other steps.
