How to run PyCharm in Ubuntu - "Run in Terminal" or "Run"? - python

When I double-click on pycharm.sh, Ubuntu lets me choose between "Run in Terminal" and "Run". What is the difference between these options?

To make it a bit more user-friendly:
After you've unpacked it, go into the directory, and run bin/pycharm.sh.
Once it opens, it either offers you to create a desktop entry, or if it doesn't, you can ask it to do so by going to the Tools menu and selecting Create Desktop Entry...
Then close PyCharm, and in the future you can just click on the created menu entry. (or copy it onto your Desktop)
To answer the specifics between Run and Run in Terminal: It's essentially the same, but "Run in Terminal" actually opens a terminal window first and shows you console output of the program. Chances are you don't want that :)
(Unless you are trying to debug an application, you usually do not need to see the output of it.)

The question is already answered, Updating answer to add the PyCharm bin directory to $PATH var, so that pycharm editor can be opened from anywhere(path) in terminal.
Edit the bashrc file,
nano .bashrc
Add following line at the end of bashrc file
export PATH="<path-to-unpacked-pycharm-installation-directory>/bin:$PATH"
Now you can open pycharm from anywhere in terminal
pycharm.sh

For Pycharm CE 2018.3 and Ubuntu 18.04 with snap installation:
env BAMF_DESKTOP_FILE_HINT=/var/lib/snapd/desktop/applications/pycharm-community_pycharm-community.desktop /snap/bin/pycharm-community %f
I get this command from KDE desktop launch icon.

As mentioned in the above answer, by updating the bashrc file you can run the pycharm.sh from anywhere on the linux terminal.
But if you love the icon and wants the Desktop shortcuts for the Pycharm on Ubuntu OS then follow the Below steps,
Quick way to create Pycharm launcher.
1. Start Pycharm using the pycharm.sh cmd from anywhere on the terminal or start the pycharm.sh located under bin folder of the pycharm artifact.
2. Once the Pycharm application loads, navigate to tools menu and select “Create Desktop Entry..”
3. Check the box if you want the launcher for all users.
4. If you Check the box i.e “Create entry for all users”, you will be asked for your password.
5. A message should appear informing you that it was successful.
6. Now Restart Pycharm application and you will find Pycharm in Unity dash and Application launcher.."

First, go to that folder which is containing pycharm.sh and open terminal from there. Then type
./pycharm.sh
this will open pycharm.
bin folder contains pycharm.sh file.

ls
cd pycharm-community-2021.2.2 (your pycharm version)

It will open your continued pycharm project

I did the edit and added the PATH for my Pycharm in .bashrc but I was still getting the error "pycharm.sh: command not found".
After trying several other things the following command resolved the issue which creates a symbolic link.
sudo ln -s /snap/pycharm-community/267/bin/pycharm.sh /usr/local/bin/pycharm
The first is location to the exact path to pycharm.sh and the second is user bin which should be on PATH env by default

Official docs says if you have installed pycharm at this location: /opt/pycharm/bin/pycharm.sh then you can make it callable from terminal by using this command:
ln -s /opt/pycharm/bin/pycharm.sh /usr/local/bin/pycharm

Why isn't my virtualenv opening up in visual studio code?

I'm working with Django right now and when I installed it through the command prompt I made a virtualenv called test, now I went into vs code and I am trying to open it up by saying workon test but it's not going into the virutalenv. I am on windows and I am using visual studio code.
To open virtual env through command prompt,
run, activate.bat
\test\Scripts\activate.bat
for bash run,
source test/bin/activate
just go to the left below corner where your python version is written click it, it will open the command palette where select the virtual env. (with its name) that's is test and press ok.
After that open new terminal and you will get what you want
In cmd typing test/Scripts/activate worked, but in vscode terminal, I had to cd till the Scripts and then type .\activate.

Using linux console in pycharm

I'm new to pycharm, virtualenv, linux and git.
I've recently begun a journey of using djangoto make webapps. Before I used sublime to make scripts however now a more complex project management system such as pycarm was needed. I actually wanted to get a linux VM and go down that road but was advised that windows python IDE such as pycharm would be suitable
I recently learnt the importance of dependencies and how to use virtualenv. However in this tutorial, under the 'How do I use my shiny new virtual environment?' it starts using commands such as:
ls env
and
which python
Neither of which my pycharm console would understand.
I could use a console emulator such cmder to use the commands but then I would remove the convience of using the IDE's integrated one.
Should I upgrade to a linux VM ? Or can I install a package that allows me to use such commands in PyCharm.
As a bonus question, what are the commands in that tutorial ? are they linux commands? when ever i see $ .... is that the linux console ?
You can accomplish this using Vagrant: https://www.vagrantup.com/
You can use Vagrant and VirtualBox to setup a Linux VM (distro of your choice) and then install all of your Python dependencies in the VM. Once you have that setup, you can tell PyCharm to use the Python interpreter in your VM by following these steps:
Open the project settings dialog box in PyCharm.
Expand Project: (your project name) on the left side.
Click on Project Interpreter.
Click on the cog icon on the upper right side of the window and select Add Remote.
Click on the Vagrant radio button.
In the Vagrant Instance Folder box, select the directory your Vagrantfile is located in.
In the Vagrant Host URL box, make sure ssh://vagrant#127.0.0.1:2222 is specified.
Click OK.
Since Vagrant is compatible with Windows this solution should work for you. I have done it successfully using macOS and it works great. Good luck!

I got this to work on Windows 10 with Anaconda Prompt. This terminal which comes with Anaconda, creates a "base" environment with a linux-like virtual machine and your Windows file system (C:\\) mounted to /c, and has bash installed with common Unix commands like cd, ls, chmod, echo, cat, ... Running programs from bash with access to environment variables is much nicer than Windows Powershell etc.
Now to get your Terminal in Pycharm to use Anaconda Prompt instead of cmd.exe, I followed this answer. After installing Anaconda and/or Anaconda Prompt, right-click -> Open File Location -> right-click the shortcut -> Properties -> copy file path. Then use your file path instead.
Conda is great for package environment management. Learn more about it here. For Django + Conda specifically, read here. You can also use pip to install from Python package indexes, github repos, and requirements.txt files instead. Unless you know how Anaconda Prompt works, I don't recommend creating your own environments from scratch. What worked for me was:
(base) C:\Users\wassadamo> conda create -n mynewenvironment --copy base
...
(base) C:\Users\wassadamo> conda activate mynewenvironment
(mynewenvironment) C:\Users\wassadamo> ls
folderA folderB file.txt
Works!
Whenever I try running conda deactivate to leave the base environment, my bash commands would stop working. So clone base as above.
Another tip: if you want to run shell scripts from Terminal within PyCharm with Anaconda Prompt this way, then execute them (e.g. "run.sh") on command line with
bash run.sh
I tried putting this on the first line of my run.sh
#!/usr/bin/bash
And running it with
./run.sh
But this had the effect of running it in an external Anaconda Prompt instance (add sleep, or some user input command to force it to wait and see for yourself). Explicitly running my .sh files with bash had the desired effect of running them in the same shell as I started them in PyCharm Terminal configured with Anaconda Prompt.

Wont run PyGame in Pycharm [duplicate]

I've downloaded pygame-1.9.1release.tar.gz from the Pygame website. I extracted and installed it and it's working fine in the command line Python interpreter in Terminal (Ubuntu). But I want to install it for some IDE, like PyCharm. How can I do it?
Well, you don't have to download it for PyCharm here. You probably know how it checks your code. Through the interpreter! You don't need to use complex command lines or anything like that. You need to is:
Download the appropriate interpreter with PyGame included
Open your PyCharm IDE (Make sure it is up to date)
Go to File
Press Settings (Or Ctrl + Alt + S)
Double click on the option that looks like Project: Name_of_Project
Click on Project Interpreter
Choose the interpreter you want to use that includes PyGame as a module
Save your options
And you are ready to go! Here is an alternate (I have never done this, please try to test it)
Add PyGame in the same folder as your PyCharm file (Your PyCharm stuff is always in
a specific file placed by you during installation/upgrade)
Please consider putting your PyCharm stuff inside a folder for easy access.

File - Settings
Double click on your project name
Select Project Interpreter
Click on green + button on the right side of the window
Type Pygame in search window
Click Install package.
Not I'm saying that the answers above won't work, but it might be frustrating to a newbie to do command line magic.
If you are using PyCharm and you are on a Windows 10 machine use the following instructions:
Click on the Windows start menu and type cmd and click on the Command Prompt icon.
Use the command pushd to navigate to your PyCharm project which should be located in your user folder on the C:\ drive. Example: C:\Users\username\PycharmProjects\project name\venv\Scripts.
(If you are unsure go to the settings within PyCharm and navigate to the Python Interpreter settings. This should show you the file path for the interpreter that your project is using. Credit to Anthony Pham for instructions to navigate to interpreter settings.)
HINT: Use copy and paste in the command prompt to paste in the file path.
Use the command pip install pygame and the pip program will handle the rest for you.
Restart you Pycharm and you should now be able to import pygame

Put the .whl file in C:\Program Files\Anaconda3
While in the folder, click on the blue File tab in the upper left corner of the Window Explorer (assuming you're using Windows)
Click on Open Windows PowerShell as administrator
Write or just copy and paste: py -m pip install pygame
It should start installing
Done!

How to get Spyder to open python scripts (.py files) directly from Windows Explorer

I have recently installed the Anaconda distribution on Windows 7 (Anaconda 3-2.4.0-Windows-x86_64). Unlike IDLE, I can't right-click and open a py file in the Spyder IDE. I will have to open Spyder first and then navigate to the file or drag and drop it in the editor. Is there any way to open the file in the editor directly from Widows Explorer?
With the current version of Anaconda (4.1.0) you can simply right-click on a python script in Windows File Explorer and choose "Open with". The first time you do this you need to select "Choose default program" and then browse to spyder.exe in the Script directory in your Anaconda installation. Also make sure that the "Always use the selected program to open this kind of file" is unchecked and then click OK. From now on spyder.exe will always be listed as one of the options when you select "Open with" from the right-click menu in Windows File Explorer.
I have had a similar problem with another piece of software that I use.
My work around for this problem is to set the file association for .py files to C:\Anaconda\Scripts\spider-script.py via the Open with dialog. If you now try to open your File.py by double clicking you'll receive an error like
~\file.py is not a valid Win32 application.
This can be resolved by editing the spyder-script.py registry key:
HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-21-3559708500-1520960832-86631148-1002\Software\Classes\Applications\spyder-script.py\shell\open\command
and replacing the default value "C:\Anaconda\Scripts\spyder-script.py" %1 with "C:\Anaconda\python.exe" "C:\Anaconda\Scripts\spyder-script.py" %1. Use the search function for this key if the path isn't the same for your machine, and of course use the appropriate path for your python installation. spyder-script.py should now execute in a python shell.

...Within an open command string, %0 or %1 are substituted with the file name being launched through the association.
(Spyder maintainer here) This functionality is available as part of our Windows installer. In other words, if you install Spyder with it, then you'll see a new entry in the Open with menu of the Windows Explorer that allows you to open Python files directly on Spyder.
Unfortunately, it's not possible for us to do the same for other installation methods (i.e. when using Anaconda or pip). That's why it's necessary to resort to different hacks, as the ones mentioned in other answers here, to have this functionality for them.
What is working very well for me in Windows (10), is associating the *.py files with a batch file (let's say "SpyderBATCH.bat") containing this line :
[ANACONDA_FOLDER_PATH]\pythonw.exe" "[ANACONDA_FOLDER_PATH]\cwp.py" "[ANACONDA_FOLDER_PATH]" "[ANACONDA_FOLDER_PATH]/pythonw.exe" "[ANACONDA_FOLDER_PATH]/Scripts/spyder-script.py" %1
Where [ANACONDA_FOLDER_PATH] has to be replaced with the full path to the Anaconda folder (usually under "Program Files").
What Windows does, when double-clicking on a python script (let's say "file.py"), is pass to SpyderBATCH, as parameter number %1, the full path to "file.py".
Then Spyder is launched and displays the script "file.py" in the editor view.
I figured I would post my solution for this as well.
I have Spyder installed in multiple different environments. You can't simply call the spyder-script.py script without errors, because the environment must be activated.

You can remove the second line and remove the environment extension from the third line if you have Spyder installed in your base environment.
Hopefully for anyone experiencing any weirdness with the other solution, this one will do the trick by activating the environment correctly.

If you are interested in adding the spyder icon (or any other) to the .py-files and if you would like to avoid the cmd-pop-up, I found out the following workaround which is feasible without admin rights:
Download the portable version of Bat To Exe Converter (I used v3.0.10).
Open your custom .bat-file in the Bat to Exe Converter.
In the options settings, activate "Icon" and give the path to the respective icon (for me it's in: .../AppData/Local/Continuum/anaconda3/Scripts/spyder.ico).
Set Exe-Format to Invisible (no empty cmd window would pop up anymore)
Convert your .bat-file to an .exe-file.
As usual, set to open .py-files with the newly created .exe.

This problem is related to anaconda installation defaults - it does not register itself in PATH by default an dicourages users to do so. After proprly registering all directories in path, spyder.exe works as expected.
How to know, what to register?
locate and activate.bat an run it in cmd, then run echo %PATH% and manually register all directories mentioning anaconda.
Alternatively, reinstall anaconda with PATH registratin enabled.
Then you can associate .py files wit spyder.exe and association will work.
System: Windows 11, Python 3.9.7 (Installed through Anaconda3)
This solution will allow you to double click .py files and have them open in the Spyder in the environment of your choice, but does NOT associate .py files with the icon for Spyder.
I'm answering because it took me over an hour to understand & piecemeal together all the (great) solutions that are provided in this thread to get something that works (thanks Martin Sorgel, JoeB152 and Max-K).
NOTE: Some commentors above say to use a Bat-to-Exe converter & that will let you get the icon too.. but, DON'T! All of the ones you're finding via google have got some bad malware in them and my computer ended up deleting the .exe's I was making using that method because they had a Trojan in them.
Full Solution:
STEP 1: Make a .bat file that will launch Spyder in a specific environment.
1.1 Open a plain text editor (e.g. Notepad, etc.) and copy/paste the text below into it.

call conda activate [YOUR ENVIRONMENT]

Update [YOUR_CONDA_PATH] in the text above with the path to Anaconda3 on your computer. Mine was C:\Users\myusername\Anaconda3\ & yours is likely similar.
1.2 Save this new file as spyderlaunch.bat and place it on your computer somewhere that you'll NEVER move it (otherwise you'll have to do STEP 2 each time you move this file. I save mine in a python_env_settings folder where I keep info on what packages I installed manually in my different environments).
NOTE: JoeB152 says you can remove the second line and remove the environment extension from the third line of the text above if you have Spyder installed in your base environment. I'm not sure if this works...
1.3 Make sure your new .bat files works! It works if when you double click on spyderlaunch.bat, that it launches and opens Spyder in the environment you want it to! (Spyder will show the environment it opens in on the bottom right hand side: ).
STEP 2: Tell your computer to associate (i.e. open) all .py files with the spyderlaunch.bat file you just created.
2.1 Open an Anaconda Terminal with "run as an administrator" (by right clicking on the application) and run the following 2, separate commands. Update[PATH_TO_YOUR.batfile] to wherever you saved spyderlaunch.bat in 1.2.
assoc .py=Python
ftype Python="[PATH_TO_YOUR.batfile]" "%1" %*
Errors?
If you don't run the Anaconda Terminal application as an administrator you will be denied access to associate .py=Python. If that's not your issue, then check that the spaces and quotation marks are exactly where they appear above. In particular, you may want to make sure there is a space in between the quotation marks around [PATH_TO_YOUR.batfile] and those around %1.
I was unable to find a spyder.exe on my installation of conda. However in my users/.anaconda/navigator/scripts I found a spyder.bat file. Using this to open the file opens an anaconda prompt and shortly after spyder will open the file. The file icon is broken but it works for me. Hope this might help.

I found that their suggested .bat file works once you copy-paste the following file from A to B:
A) C:\Users\USERNAME\Anaconda3\Scripts\spyder-script.py
B) C:\Users\USERNAME\Anaconda3\envs\ENVRIONMENT_NAME\Scripts\
...where ENVIRONMENT_NAME is the name of your environment, such as main or test.
The .bat file contains:

To be able to add packages:
Make sure Anaconda is installed.
Go to Spyder preferences
Go to Python interpreter
Select: "Use the following Python interpreter"
Select file path with Anaconda and hit apply
Now you should be able to open files directed using Spyder and update your environment using Anaconda.
I made a batch utility spy.bat for this (not in the Anaconda directory)

Then, I associated the .py file type in Windows with this batch file as:
Right click any .py
Choose 'Open With' -> 'More Apps' -> 'Search on your PC' ->'select spy.bat'
In the spy.bat:
E:\Anaconda3 is my Anaconda installation directory.
First line starts the environment (Anaconda prompt).
Second line starts the spyder-script. %1 is to open the pyscript you want to open.
