how to install GEM package availble for python in GitHub? - python

I want to install a python package availble in GitHub (https://github.com/palash1992/GEM) named GEM (graph embedding methods). but I dont know how and from which point should I start. Can anyone give a step by step installing instruction? I dont have git on my computer. Should I have install it first? For more information I have python 3.7 version on my system.
I already tried using: pip install GEM command in cmd.
pip install git+git://github.com/palash1992/GEM.
Non of them worked.

The package uses setuptools, which is a common way of installing python modules. To install in your home directory, use:
python setup.py install --user
Just copy and paste the above line into your command prompt and you should be fine.

Why Python does not see newly built CV2 package in Windows 10 PC?

I am following step by step instructions from "How to Build and Install OpenCV from Source". I was able to get everything installed and compiled properly in Visual studio.
When I built "INSTALL" project, it was completed as follows with no issues.
I added the path "C:\object_detector\opencv-4.3.0\build\install\x64\vc16\bin" to Environment settings.
CMAKE Python path is the same version I am running when testing the CV2. When I issue "import cv2" at Python prompt, I get error : "No module name cv2"
When I run opencv_version.exe in the new build folder shows exact OpenCV version I built. This suggests the built was successful.
Why Python does not see my build ?
You need to install the dependencies. Using pip:
pip install -r requirements.txt.
If you had it, you need to upgrade
python -m pip install --upgrade pip
If you already installed OpenCV, afterward you have got to install
pip install opencv-contrib-python
You should check those things.
The issues was that during make, it did not update Include folder in system path. Once added, it was fine.

Keep getting the "Command "python setup.py egg_info" failed with error code 1" [duplicate]

I'm trying to install some packages with pip.
But pip install unroll gives me
Command "python setup.py egg_info" failed with error code 1 in

How can I solve this?
About the error code
According to the Python documentation:
This module makes available standard errno system symbols. The value of each symbol is the corresponding integer value. The names and descriptions are borrowed from linux/include/errno.h, which should be pretty all-inclusive.
Error code 1 is defined in errno.h and means Operation not permitted.
About your error
Your setuptools do not appear to be installed. Just follow the Installation Instructions from the PyPI website.
If it's already installed, try
pip install --upgrade setuptools
If it's already up to date, check that the module ez_setup is not missing. If it is, then
pip install ez_setup
Then try again
pip install unroll
If it's still not working, maybe pip didn't install/upgrade setup_tools properly so you might want to try
easy_install -U setuptools
And again
pip install unroll
Here's a little guide explaining a little bit how I usually install new packages on Python + Windows. It seems you're using Windows paths, so this answer will stick to that particular SO:
I never use a system-wide Python installation. I only use virtualenvs, and usually I try to have the latest version of 2.x & 3.x.
My first attempt is always doing pip install package_i_want in some of my Visual Studio command prompts. What Visual Studio command prompt? Well, ideally the Visual Studio which matches the one which was used to build Python. For instance, let's say your Python installation says Python 2.7.11 (v2.7.11:6d1b6a68f775, Dec 5 2015, 20:40:30) [MSC v.1500 64 bit (AMD64)] on win32. The version of Visual Studio used to compile Python can be found here, so v1500 means I'd be using vs2008 x64 command prompt
If the previous step failed for some reason I just try using easy_install package_i_want
If the previous step failed for some reason I go to gohlke website and I check whether my package is available over there. If it's so, I'm lucky, I just download it into my virtualenv and then I just go to that location using a command prompt and I do pip install package_i_want.whl
If the previous step didn't succeed I'll just try to build the wheel myself and once it's generated I'll try to install it with pip install package_i_want.whl
Now, if we focus in your specific problem, where you're having a hard time installing the unroll package. It seems the fastest way to install it is doing something like this:
git clone https://github.com/Zulko/unroll
cd unroll && python setup.py bdist_wheel
Copy the generated unroll-0.1.0-py2-none-any.whl file from the created dist folder into your virtualenv.
pip install unroll-0.1.0-py2-none-any.whl
That way it will install without any problems. To check it really works, just login into the Python installation and try import unroll, it shouldn't complain.
One last note: This method works almost 99% of the time, and sometimes you'll find some pip packages which are specific to Unix or Mac OS X, in that case, when that happens I'm afraid the best way to get a Windows version is either posting some issues to the main developers or having some fun by yourself porting to Windows (typically a few hours if you're not lucky) :)
It was resolved after upgrading pip:
python -m pip install --upgrade pip
pip install "package-name"
I got stuck exactly with the same error with psycopg2. It looks like I skipped a few steps while installing Python and related packages.
sudo apt-get install python-dev libpq-dev
Go to your virtual env
pip install psycopg2
(In your case you need to replace psycopg2 with the package you have an issue with.)
It worked seamlessly.
I got this same error while installing mitmproxy using pip3. The below command fixed this:
pip3 install --upgrade setuptools
Download and install the Microsoft Visual C++ Compiler for Python 2.7 from https://www.microsoft.com/en-in/download/details.aspx?id=44266 - this package contains the compiler and set of system headers necessary for producing binary wheels for Python 2.7 packages.
Open a command prompt in elevated mode (run as administrator)
Firstly do pip install ez_setup
Then do pip install unroll (It will start installing numpy, music21, decorator, imageio, tqdm, moviepy, unroll) # Please be patient for music21 installation
Python 2.7.11 64 bit used

sudo apt-get install python-psycopg2 python-mysqldb
I had the same issue when installing the "Twisted" library and solved it by running the following command on Ubuntu 16.04 (Xenial Xerus):
sudo apt-get install python-setuptools python-dev build-essential
It's a dependency issue.
I tried running the following commands helped me sorting out the dependencies, in my case the dependency was
grpcio
pip3 install --upgrade pip
python3 -m pip install --upgrade setuptools
pip3 install --no-cache-dir --force-reinstall -Iv grpcio==1.36.1
pip3 install pulsar-client==2.7.0
remember you must have python3 installed in your system.
First try:
pip install unroll
For sure not work :)
Then Try:
pip2 install unroll
Still get error Try:
pip3 install unroll
If pip3 Worked then suggest to change configuration to use pip3 as pip because you will get a lot of issues as the modern now is Python3 = pip3 if you execute a script files.
I had the same problem.
The problem was:
pyparsing 2.2 was already installed and my requirements.txt was trying to install pyparsing 2.0.1 which throw this error
Context: I was using virtualenv, and it seems the 2.2 came from my global OS Python site-packages, but even with --no-site-packages flag (now by default in last virtualenv) the 2.2 was still present. Surely because I installed Python from their website and it added Python libraries to my $PATH.
Maybe a pip install --ignore-installed would have worked.
Solution: as I needed to move forwards, I just removed the pyparsing==2.0.1 from my requirements.txt.
I ran into the same error code when trying to install a Python module with pip.

Based on that answer, my problem was solved by running the pip install command with sudo prefixed:
sudo pip install python-mpd2

To avoid this problem you can invoke Python with -m pip instead of running pip directly.
Use python3 -m pip "command", eg:

I tried all of the above with no success. I then updated my Python version from 2.7.10 to 2.7.13, and it resolved the problems that I was experiencing.
That means some packages in pip are old or not correctly installed.
Try checking version and then upgrading pip.Use auto remove if that works.
If the pip command shows an error all the time for any command or it freezes, etc.
The best solution is to uninstall it or remove it completely.
Install a fresh pip and then update and upgrade your system.

next installation helps me:
pip3 install cython
This worked for me:
sudo xcodebuild -license
Upgrading Python to version 3 fixed my problem. Nothing else did.
I downloaded the .whl file from http://www.lfd.uci.edu/~gohlke/pythonlibs/ and then did:
pip install scipy-0.19.1-cp27-cp27m-win32.whl
Note that the version you need to use (win32/win_amd-64) depends on the version of Python and not that of Windows.
I had this problem using virtualenvs (with pipenv) on my new development setup.
I could only solve it by upgrading the psycopg2 version from 2.6.2 to 2.7.3.

I faced the same problem with the same error message but on Ubuntu 16.04 LTS (Xenial Xerus) instead:
Command "python setup.py egg_info" failed with error code 1 in /tmp/pip-install-w71uo1rg/poster/
I tested all the solutions provided above and none of them worked for me. I read the full TraceBack and found out I had to create the virtual environment with Python version 2.7 instead (the default one uses Python 3.5 instead):
virtualenv --python=/usr/bin/python2.7 my_venv
Once I activated it, I run pip install unirest successfully.
try on linux:
sudo apt install python-pip python-bluez libbluetooth-dev libboost-python-dev libboost-thread-dev libglib2.0-dev bluez bluez-hcidump
Had the same problem on my Win10 PC with different packages and tried everything mentioned so far.
Finally solved it by disabling Comodo Auto-Containment.

I had the same problem and was able to fix by doing the following.
Windows Python needs Visual C++ libraries installed via the SDK to build code, such as via setuptools.extension.Extension or numpy.distutils.core.Extension. For example, building f2py modules in Windows with Python requires Visual C++ SDK as installed above. On Linux and Mac, the C++ libraries are installed with the compiler.

Methods to solve setup.pu egg_info issue when updating setuptools or not other methods doesnot works.
If CONDA version of the library is available to install use conda instead of pip.
Clone the library repo and then try installation by pip install -e . or by python setup.py install
upgrading python's version did the work for me.
I have just encountered the same problem when trying to pip install -e . a new repo. I did not notice that the contents of setup.py haven't been saved properly and I was effectively running the command with an empty setup.py.
Hence you may experience the same error message if the setup.py of the target package is either empty or malformed.
I solved it on Centos 7 by using:
sudo yum install libcurl-devel

Python 2.7: No module named setup tools

I am trying to clone and install the keras package from github. When I run sudo python setup.py install, it says no module named setuptools. I looked at some posts that were for python 3; however, this solutions did not work for me. I am working on a terminal from a windows computer. I am using python 2.7. I tried the following commands: python -m pip install -U pip setuptools from this website: https://packaging.python.org/installing/. However, nothing seemed to work.
If you are working on Windows then you should be typing batch commands, not bash (Linux, OSX), therefore, sudo ... should not be used by you.
Firstly, I would recommend to install pip, it will make package update and installation a lot easier. Save it as get-pip.py and run the following in the directory the file is located python get-pip.py. Official pip website.
Then install upgrade pip which will also install the latest versions of setuptools and wheel with this python -m pip install -U pip setuptools.

Trying to install pygame for python 3.6, running into difficulties [duplicate]

I'm having trouble installing a Python package on my Windows machine, and would like to install it with Christoph Gohlke's Window binaries. (Which, to my experience, alleviated much of the fuss for many other package installations). However, only .whl files are available.

I just used the following which was quite simple. First open a console then cd to where you've downloaded your file like some-package.whl and use
pip install some-package.whl

If you copy the *.whl file to your local drive (ex. C:\some-dir\some-file.whl) use the following command line parameters --
pip install C:/some-dir/some-file.whl
First, make sure you have updated pip to enable wheel support:
pip install --upgrade pip
Then, to install from wheel, give it the directory where the wheel is downloaded. For example, to install package_name.whl:

There are several file versions on the great Christoph Gohlke's site.
Something I have found important when installing wheels from this site is to first run this from the Python console:
import pip
print(pip.pep425tags.get_supported())
so that you know which version you should install for your computer. Picking the wrong version may fail the installing of the package (especially if you don't use the right CPython tag, for example, cp27).
I am in the same boat as the OP.
Using a Windows command prompt, from directory:
C:\Python34\Scripts>
pip install wheel
seemed to work.
Changing directory to where the whl was located, it just tells me 'pip is not recognized'. Going back to C:\Python34\Scripts>, then using the full command above to provide the 'where/its/downloaded' location, it says Requirement 'scikit_image-...-win32.whl' looks like a filename, but the filename does not exist.
So I dropped a copy of the .whl in Python34/Scripts, ran the exact same command over again (with the --find-links= still going to the other folder), and this time it worked.
There's a slight difference between accessing the .whl file in python2 and python3. In python3, you need to install wheel first and then you can access .whl files.
Python3
pip install package.whl
OR
pip install wheel
And then by using wheel
wheel unpack some-package.whl
Python2
pip install some-package.whl
You have to run pip.exe from the command prompt on my computer.
I type C:/Python27/Scripts/pip2.exe install numpy
On Windows you can't just upgrade using pip install --upgrade pip, because the pip.exe is in use and there would be an error replacing it. Instead, you should upgrade pip like this:
easy_install --upgrade pip
Then check the pip version:
pip --version
If it shows 6.x series, there is wheel support.
Only then, you can install a wheel package like this:
pip install your-package.whl
To be able to install wheel files with a simple doubleclick on them you can do one the following:
1) Run two commands in command line under administrator privileges:
assoc .whl=pythonwheel
ftype pythonwheel=cmd /c pip.exe install "%1" ^& pause
2) Alternatively, they can be copied into a wheel.bat file and executed with 'Run as administrator' checkbox in the properties.

You can download a specific .whl (wheel) package from - https://www.lfd.uci.edu/~gohlke/pythonlibs/
CD (Change directory) to that downloaded package and install it manually by -
pip install PACKAGENAME.whl
ex:
pip install ad3‑2.1‑cp27‑cp27m‑win32.whl

To avoid having to download such files, you can try:
pip install --use-wheel pillow

You can install the .whl file, using pip install filename. Though to use it in this form, it should be in the same directory as your command line, otherwise specify the complete filename, along with its address like pip install C:\Some\PAth\filename.
Also make sure the .whl file is of the same platform as you are using, do a python -V to find out which version of Python you are running and if it is win32 or 64, install the correct version according to it.

New Python users on Windows often forget to add Python's \Scripts directory to the PATH variable during the installation. I recommend to use the Python launcher and execute pip as a script with the -m switch. Then you can install the wheels for a specific Python version (if more than one are installed) and the Scripts directory doesn't have to be in the PATH. So open the command line, navigate (with the cd command) to the folder where the .whl file is located and enter:
py -3.6 -m pip install your_whl_file.whl
Replace 3.6 by your Python version or just enter -3 if the desired Python version appears first in the PATH. And with an active virtual environment: py -m pip install your_whl_file.whl.
Of course you can also install packages from PyPI in this way, e.g.
py -3.6 -m pip install pygame
I would be suggesting you the exact way how to install .whl file.
Initially I faced many issues but then I solved it, Here is my trick to install .whl files.
Follow The Steps properly in order to get a module imported
Make sure your .whl file is kept in the python 2.7/3.6/3.7/.. folder.
Initially when you download the .whl file the file is kept in downloaded folder, my
suggestion is to change the folder. It makes it easier to install the file.
Open command prompt and open the folder where you have kept the file by entering
cd c:\python 3.7
3.Now, enter the command written below
>py -3.7(version name) -m pip install (file name).whl
Click enter and make sure you enter the version you are currently using with correct
file name.
Once you press enter, wait for few minutes and the file will be installed and you will
be able to import the particular module.
In order to check if the module is installed successfully, import the module in idle
and check it.

On the MacOS, with pip installed via MacPorts into the MacPorts python2.7, I had to use #Dunes solution:
sudo python -m pip install some-package.whl
Where python was replaced by the MacPorts python in my case, which is python2.7 or python3.5 for me.
The -m option is "Run library module as script" according to the manpage.
(I had previously run sudo port install py27-pip py27-wheel to install pip and wheel into my python 2.7 installation first.)
What I did was first updating the pip by using the command:
pip install --upgrade pip and then I also installed wheel by using command: pip install wheel and then it worked perfectly Fine.

Download the package (.whl).
Put the file inside the script folder of python directory
C:\Python36\Scripts
Use the command prompt to install the package.
C:\Python36\Scripts>pip install package_name.whl
Theoretically:
Because wheel is a built distribution spec ie, no dependency on a build system and because it's a ZIP-format archive, it just has to be unpacked to the target location in-order to be used.
While pip install *.wheel adds extra features, we can also unzip (using a standard archive tool eg: 7zip) the .whl file into site-packages directory to use the package.

Using pip with pip-installed mercurial

So I installed Mercurial with:
pip install mercurial
Now, when I am doing:
pip install -r requirements.txt
I get:
> Cannot find command 'hg'
Is there any way to make pip use c:\python27\scripts\hg.bat as the hg command? I can run it simply by typing hg, so I assumed that pip would also.
I did try using:
mklink c:\windows\system32\hg.bat c:\python27\scripts\hg.bat
And:
mklink c:\windows\system32\hg.exe c:\python27\scripts\hg.bat
Neither with any affect.
I have looked elsewhere on Google, and every answer concerning hg assumes that you've either used apt-get or the installer to get Mercurial installed.
If there is a way to use the mercurial available with pip, I'm thinking that the initial setup of any Windows development environment would go quicker.
I am using Windows 7 (32-bit Python 2.7.10).
