How do I customize formish error messages? - python

I'm using formish to handle web forms but I don't like the automatically generated error messages when validation fails. Where do I customize those error messages?

The best place for feedback on formish is in the google groups which is linked to from the http://form.ish.io page..
As for customising the error messages, the best way would be to create your own validator (which is pretty simple, have a look in the validatish module). However, you've inspired me to think about making all of the validators take a custom argument for each type of message... I'll have a think about that one. If you struggle customising your own errors, drop into the google group...

I've added custom messages to the validatish module for you .. If you get it from github, you'll see how it works (you pass a dictionary of messages to the validate function or object - e.g. Required(messages={'required': 'dont forget it!'}) )

Django form error handling architecture

In the clean method of my form class I am working with many different inputs from the billing, contact, and account sections of the form. As such there are many self.add_error statements and many fields that depend on other fields in order to validate.
I have noticed that after adding an error for a field I am unable to access that field any more. This is strange as you can add more than one error to a field, but that is not the issue.
I am seeing this method grow more complicated and unreadable, is there a good way to do this so the person that comes after me will understand it? I don't feel that the code ordering to prevent access after error is appropriate. My only thought is to set error variables in clean and call a different method at the end to add the errors to the fields.

Edit: To add, I am only returning after clean has run in order to give the user all errors at once. I did not feel that returning after each found error was a good user experience
It's good practice to provide your code to help people see what you are doing. This includes your error reports/traceback info. Use the markdown options to help make your post more readable.
I could be wrong but from my own experience, I usually clean each field individually as per the documentation unless they rely on each other such as passwords, etc.

Django: Get notified of all changes in database

I was wandering if there's a way to get notified of any changes to objects in a Django database. Right now I just need an email if anybody adds or changes anything but it would be best if I could hook a function triggered by any change and could decide what to do.
Is there an easy way to do it in Django?
Two ideas come to mind:
Override the predefined model method for saving.
Use a signal like post_save.

Fully customized login system in Django?

I am currently writing an application which I plan to sell as SaaS. Without giving away "secrets," I can say that it is basically a "document editing system" in which many users will be submitting documents.
The basic heirarchy is this:
Institution
Individual
Document
Sub-document
So each Individual should be able to BROWSE all documents that were submitted by anybody in their institution, but should only be able to EDIT documents that they created.
No individual should even be aware of the existence of another Institution--that should all be completely hidden.
I have written a Django/Python class that would facilitate this, but every document regarding authentication that I have read requires that I use the User object. Is this just a limitation of Django, or is there a way to do this?
If there is a way, how can I get my own "Individual" class details attached to the "request" objects so I can validate the things I should be showing the users?
What you're looking for is authorization, not authentication. Django's built-in authorization system is fairly crude, as you've discovered. You'll need something like django-authority if you want a more complete solution.
The auth module is typically used to cover authentication cases.
Gives you groups (Institutions), Users (Individuals) and permissions.
Using these features you can perform checking if a user is a member of a group or owns a doc before allowing them to see or edit the doc.

If you need to go beyond the typical use case, supporting LDAP for example, then you can look at writing your own authentication backend.

In general, if you need to attach more information to the builtin User model, you would create new model which subclasses models.Model (not User), and identify it in settings as AUTH_PROFILE_MODULE. You can get the appropriate instance of your model from a user by calling user.get_profile(). (see http://docs.djangoproject.com/en/dev/topics/auth/#storing-additional-information-about-users).
This is generally useful for adding extra fields to User such as address, contact information, etc. While it would be possible to use this for your authentication needs, you'd most likely be better off using the built in groups, or a more comprehensive solution like django-authority as others have mentioned. I've included this answer only because it seems to be what you were asking for (a way to attach a class to User), but not really what you need (authorization).

What are the advantages, if any, to using mako's or pylon's form handlers instead of coding the form manually?

It'll save you a lot of time (even if you use them just during development) to use Pylons built-in form handling. Later if you want to strip them out and hard code a full form for each page, you can but I'd use the built-in one and find ways to customize within it before going completely manual about it.

Model and Validation Confusion - Looking for advice

I'm somewhat new to Python, Django, and I'd like some advice on how to layout the code I'd like to write.
I have the model written that allows a file to be uploaded. In the models save method I'm checking if the file has a specific extension. If it has an XML extension I'm opening the file and grabbing some information from the file to save in the database. I have this model working. I've tested it in the built-in administration. It works.
Currently when there's an error (it's not an XML file; the file can't be opened; a specific attribute doesn't exist) I'm throwing an custom "Exception" error. What I would like to do is some how pass these "Exception" error messages to the view (whether that's a custom view or the built-in administration view) and have an error message displayed like if the forms library was being used. Is that possible?
I'm starting to think I'm going to have to write the validation checks again using the forms library. If that's the case, is it possible to still use the built-in administration template, but extend the form it uses to add these custom validations?
Anything to help my confusion would be appreciated.

This is exactly what I'd like to do. However, I don't know how to associate my forms with my models. When ever I've created forms in the past they've always acted as their own entity. I could never get the administration views to use them while using the ModelForm class. Can you shead any light on this?
I've read over the link you gave me and it seams to be what I've done in the past, with no luck.

You're happiest if you validate in a Form -- that's what Forms are for. The admin interface will use the Form you associate with your model; your own views can also use the form.
Getting attributes from the file, should probably be a separate method of the model class. The separate method of the model class can be used by the save() method of the model class or invoked at other times by view functions.

Validation in a form is done with a clean() method or a clean_somefield() method.
The "Adding custom validation to the admin" link (above) shows how to add the clean_name method to the "MyArticleAdminForm" form.
If you're still confused, trying actually typing the code from the Django web page and see what it does.
I guess the best way would be to implement a special field class that extends FileField with custom validation of the uploaded file.
The validation is implemented in the field's clean method. It should check the XML file and raise ValidationErrors if it encounters errors. The admin system should then treat your custom errors like any other field errors.
The ImageField class is a good example of special validation like this — I recommend just reading through the source.
You can provide a form that will be used by the admin site. You can then perform validations in the form code that will be displayed in the admin area.

I am confused with your question, so I am assuming that you should be asking 'Where should I catch input errors if any ? ' to yourself.
The Model and View as I see are like pieces in a small assembly line.
View/ Form validation is the first action which should be performed. If there is any issue with the input data through the forms. It should be prevented at the form level using form.is_valid() etc.
The models functionality should be to provide meta information about the entity itself apart from performing CRUD. Ideally it should not be bothered about the data it is getting for the CRUD operations.
