Can't kill my python code. What's wrong? - python

Okay, so I'm writing a very simplistic password cracker in python that brute forces a password with alphanumeric characters. Currently this code only supports 1 character passwords and a password file with a md5 hashed password inside. It will eventually include the option to specify your own character limits (how many characters the cracker tries until it fails). Right now I cannot kill this code when I want it to die. I have included a try and except snippit, however it's not working. What did I do wrong?

The way to allow a KeyboardInterrupt to end your program is to do nothing. They work by depending on nothing catching them in an except block; when an exception bubbles all the way out of a program (or thread), it terminates.
What you have done is to trap the KeyboardInterrupts and handle them by printing a message and then continuing.
As for why the program gets stuck, there is nothing that ever causes num1 to change, so the md5 calculation is the same calculation every time. If you wanted to iterate over the symbols in alphaNumeric, then do that: for symbol in alphaNumeric: # do something with 'symbol'.
Of course, that will still only consider every possible one-character password. You're going to have to try harder than that... :)
I think you're also confused about the use of classes. Python does not require you to wrap everything inside a class. The main at the end of your program does nothing useful; your code runs because it is evaluated when the compiler tries to figure out what a main class is. This is an abuse of syntax. What you want to do is put this code in a main function, and call the function (the same way you call checker currently).

Besides printing, you need to actually exit your program when capturin KeyboardInterrupt, you're only printing a message.

This is what worked for me...

Well, when you use that try and except block, the error is raised when that error occurs. In your case, KeyboardInterrupt is your error here. But when KeyboardInterrupt is activated, nothing happens. This due to having nothing in the except part. You could do this after importing sys:

sys.exit()
sys.exit() is an easy way to safely exit the program. This can be used for making programs with passwords to end the program if the password is wrong or something like that. That should fix the except part. Now to the try part:
If you have break as the end of the try part, nothing is going to happen. Why? Because break only works on loops, most people tend to do it for while loops. Let's make some examples. Here's one:

The break statement will stop and end the loop immediately unlike its brother continue, which continues the loop. That's just extra information. Now if you have break in a something like this:
if liners == 0:
break
That's going to depend where that if statement is. If it is in a loop, it is going to stop the loop. If not, nothing is going to happen. I am assuming you made an attempt to exit the function which didn't work. It looks like the program should end, so use sys.exit() like I showed you above. Also, you should group that last piece of code (in the class) into a seperate function. I hope this helps you!

How can I end a 'try' loop in 'while' loop?

I tried end it by using break, pass, and I even leaves it empty what I get is Unexpected EOF while parsing, I searched online and they said it is caused when the code blocks were not completed. Please show me if any of my code is wrong, thanks.
Btw, I'm using python 3 and I don't know how to be more specific for this question, kindly ask me if you did not understand. Sorry for my poor english.

Your problem isn't the break, it's the overall, high-level shape of your try clause.
A try requires either an except or a finally block. You have neither, which means your try clause is never actually complete. So python keeps looking for the next bit until it reaches EOF (End Of File), at which point it complains.
The python docs explain in more detail, but basically you need either:
try:
do_stuff_here()
finally:
do_cleanup_here() # always runs, even if the above raises an exception
or
try:
do_stuff_here()
except SomeException:
handle_exception_here() # if do_stuff_here raised a SomeException
(You can also have both the except and finally.) If you don't need either the cleanup or the exception handling, that's even easier: just get rid of the try altogether, and have the block go directly under that while True.
Finally, as a terminology thing: try is not a loop. A loop is a bit of code that gets executed multiple times -- it loops. The try gets executed once. It's a "clause," not a "loop."
You have to also 'catch' the exception with the except statement, otherwise the try has no use.
So if you do something like:

# What to do if specified error is encountered
This way if anywhere in your try block an exception is raised it will not break your code, but it will be catched by your except.

Learn Python the Hard Way - Exercise 36 - if else die function

The second rule for If-Statements here, which has me confused states that:
If this else should never run because it doesn't make sense, then you must use a die function in the else that prints out an error message and dies, just like we did in the last exercise. This will find many errors.

Is it essentially saying that you must successfully terminate the program if a condition is not met?
Yes, the idea is:

You could also use an assert instead, or raise an exception, or anything else that would fail catastrophically. This helps you validate at runtime that the clause you didn't expect to execute, really didn't run.
IMHO you shouldn't get too hung up on how this die is done, exactly. The important point the referred text tries to make is that when you're sure some condition is true, you might as well assert it forcefully so that you can catch runtime bugs.
The guide is trying to show you that you can see the choice that a user gives when it's something that you don't check for in your if statement. If your else looks like:
else:
dead(choice)
You will be able to see what the user input that you didn't expect.
The problem is that the syntax only allows for "Left", when the prompt allows entry of anything. In other words, if I enter "Bob", I will starve. I should be trapping for anything that isn't appropriate and "die"ing at that point (or helping the user make an appropriate decision).
This is an attempt at teaching error handling and die. You would rewrite it such that you allow accurate entry or die (no exit). If you don't choose left, there is no other choice even though the prompt states there are two choices.
If you truly expect only 'left' to be added, a better way of checking for unexpeted input would be
if choice != ‘left’:

That way you still validate that the input is what you expected, but it saves indentation and space for the main logic.

What is CLI-Loop ? What's the difference with normal loop?

I was doing some research about Python.
And I saw something like this.

If not, what does it mean?
What's so special about it?
There is nothing special about the loop; the author simply introduces the code block, stating that it'll interpret commands.
Which is exactly what the loop does; using raw_input(), it asks for user input from the terminal, then executes functions based on the input. In other words, it takes commands, interfacing with the user.
CLI indeed stands for Command Line Interface. There's nothing special about this loop, it's just called "the CLI loop" to indicate it's a loop handling the input taken from the command line.

Python/Calling python scripts within bash terminal: What exactly happens when user presses Ctrl-C?

I need help with controlling a python script. I want to run a script that controls two robots. A routine consists of a series of motions which either move the arm or move the gripper. The form of the code is as follows:

If the routine is complete (i.e. every function was called), it asks if I want to restart, and if I choose yes, behaves as normal, which is good.
But, if I press ctrl-C in the middle of the routine, the message "Restart the routine?" still pops up and asks for input, and I don't want that. What I want is either one of the following:
if and only if the user presses ctrl-C, completely exit everything, no questions asked.
if and only if the user presses ctrl-C, return the robots to home position (defined in that list of arm poses) and then completely exit everything.
My main question is, how does ctrl-C actually work? I thought it would just exit the script but in actuality it still prints stuff and asks for input. A subset of that broad question is, how can I just get the desired behavior (completely exit everything when pressing ctrl-C)?
I realize this is a clunky way of doing what I need the robots to do, but it is the best way I can think of with my limited knowledge of python.

The comments/answers about signals are technically correct (on UNIX), but in Python the CTRL+C handling is neatly wrapped away from you. What happens in a Python program is that at the point where you press CTRL+C, a KeyboardInterrupt exception is raised.
Now, your problem seems to be in the code that you have removed from the listing, i.e., in the "calling robot routines" part. That code catches the KeyboardInterrupt.
I guess either your code or library code that you call does something like:
try:
# some long running code
# ...
except:
# something, or just pass
Note the naked except:. Naked excepts are almost always a bad thing. Instead you or the library should do:
try:
# some long running code
# ...
except Exception:
# something to fix the situation
Using except Exception: does not catch the KeyboardInterrupt exception, which will let you handle it appropriately, or just let the program exit. Have a look at the Exception class hierarchy.

Running a function in Python every time any key is pressed?

First off, forgive me, because I'm incredibly new at this Python thing (I'm really an HTML/CSS kind of guy, but I'm trying to branch out). This is probably an elementary sort of question, but we all have to start somewhere, right?
I'm putting together a very basic Python program that will select a random letter from a string of letters and print it out every time someone hits the any key. The whole thing is pretty simple, and currently returns a random letter, but doesn't wait for a keypress to do so, and stops after completing the function runs once.

It's clear that whatever I need to do ought to fall inside of random_letter someplace. I've been googling around and have found lots of references to raw_input and mvscrt, but I'm not entirely sure what I need. It's entirely possible that I'm just asking the question wrong.
I'm assuming assuming that I need some sort of loop going on to keep this running indefinitely.

For starters, you need a loop somewhere to continue prompting the user. You also need some sort of exit condition for the loop. This loop can be inside the function like so:
def random_letter(letters):
while True:
x = raw_input('Press enter for a random letter...')
if x == 'done':
break
print random.choice(letters)
random_letter('abcdef')
Notice that inside the loop we use raw_input to prompt the user to type something, anything, then press enter. When the user types done and hits enter, we break out of the loop using break.
An alternative would be to wrap your existing function in a loop and take care of the prompting outside the function.

if x == 'done':

random_letter('abcdef')
If you don't have to use a loop, and thinking of capturing keyboard events, then there are no cross-platform ways of doing it: Is there a cross-platform python low-level API to capture or generate keyboard events?
