Using Python's UnitTest Mock for a new Object - python

I'm trying to learn how to use Mocks for Python. However I've been struggling with some basic application of it.
Let's say our piece of code that I want to test is this:
class ProductionClass:
def method(self):
newone=ProductionClass()
newone.something(1, 2, 3)
def something(self, a, b, c):
pass
def __init__(self):
print("Test")
Which have a method which is simply create a new object of itself and calls a method of that class.

Once again, this is a very simple UnitTest, basically copypasted from 26.5.1.1 of https://docs.python.org/3/library/unittest.mock-examples.html .
However, this would test if real.something has been called, meanwhile the one i really want to test is if newone.something has been called.
Considering newone is created later when we actually call method()-method how do I use mock to test it?

You can test this by simply instantiate ProductionClass in setUp method and patch ProductionClass in test_one as follows

I just modified the production class to show that both object refers to the same instance of the mock

Output:

You can verify that both object refers the same instance of the mock object by looking the id
PS: I've been using mock package for this example so you probably need to install it using pip.

Mocking dependencies

I am Python newbie and trying to understand how to mock methods in UTs.
Here is my Test

I get AssertionError. Could you help me understand how to fix this?
a.simpleFun = MagicMock(return_value=3)
This line is only modifying the method of your mock object a (which you really should rename simpleModuleMock, since it's a mock of a SimpleModule class and not an A). It doesn't mock every instance of SimpleModule everywhere in your code, hence why an instance of SimpleModule is instantiated in A.fun() and not an instance of a mock of SimpleModule.
I would use dependency injection and pass an instance of SimpleModule to A.fun() instead of instantiating it inside of it, so that you can pass a mock. You could also make thing a public variable like so:

Note that there may exist better solutions with Python, but if there are, 1. I don't know of them, and 2. I doubt they're good practice.

How to mock using sys.modules and with mock.patch (Python interference on static functions)

So I've this code that mocks two times, the first time by mocking imports with:
sys.modules['random'] = MagicMock()
The second time happens inside the unittest of a function that used that import, for example a function that used random
The tests. py is:

The original file Foo.py is:

The two mocks contrarrest each other, and the mocking of random doesn't happen.
When it prints random it actually prints:
<<bound method Random.choice of <random.Random object at 0x7fe688028018>>
I want that to print a MagicMock.
Can someone help me understand what's happening? Why are they contrarresting each other?
You don't need to update the module source with sys.modules['random'] = MagicMock() without this line it works fine <MagicMock name='choice' id='...'>. patch already does all the work for the isolated temporary updating the method. See more explanation in the docs - Where to patch

Python unittest: Unable to mock imported functions so that conditional evaluates to False

I'm encountering a problem with unit testing in Python. Specifically, when I try to mock a function my code imports, variables assigned to the output of that function get assigned to a MagicMock object instead of the mock-function's return_value. I've been digging through the docs for python's unittest library, but am not having any luck.
The following is the code I want to test:

this is what I've tried:

functionB_mock.return_value = None # or False, or 'foo' or whatever.
myClass = MyClass()
myClass.do_something()
self.assertTrue(else_block_was_executed)
The issue I have is that when the test gets to variable = functionB in MyClass, the variable doesn't get set to my return value; it gets set to a MagicMock object (and so the if-statement always evaluates to True). How do I mock an imported function such that when executed, variables actually get set to the return value and not the MagicMock object itself?
We'd have to see what import path you're actually using with path.to.MyClass.functionB. When mocking objects, you don't necessarily use the path directly to where the object is located, but the one that the intepreter sees when recursively importing modules.
For example, if your test imports MyClass from myclass.py, and that file imports functionB from production_class.py, the mock path would be myclass.functionB, instead of production_class.functionB.
Then there's the issue that you need additional mocks of MyClass.do_other_stuff and MyClass.do_something_else in to check whether MyClass called the correct downstream method, based on the return value of functionB.
Here's a working example that tests both possible return values of functionB, and whether they call the correct downstream method:

What I wound up doing was changing the import statements in MyClass to import the object instead of the individual methods. I was then able to mock the object without any trouble.
More explicitly I changed MyClass to look like this:

do_something_else
and changed my test to

How do I override imports of other files for unit testing

I am currently attempting to write unit tests for my Main.py's main() function
Here is a simplified version of my Main.py:

In my Unit Tests\MainUnitTests.py I want to import ..\Main.py and fake the Configuration class in such a way that I can hit Test path1 and Test path2
I found that i can assert sys.exit() with the following:
with self.assertRaises(SystemExit) as cm:
main()
self.assertEqual(cm.exception.code, 1)
but I am having trouble overriding the from Configuration import Configuration
Thoughts?
So far I have tried the following within Unit Tests\MainUnitTests.py:

Another example for demonstration:

when you use the import
from bar import a
it import the name directly into the module, so monkeypatching bar won't help, you need to override a directly in the main file:
def fake_a():
print("OVERRIDEN!")
main.a = fake_a
Do know that unittest has helper functions for this in the mock subpackage, I believe you could do something like:
from unittest.mock import patch
...
with patch("main.a", fake_a) as mock_obj: #there are additional things you can do with the mock_obj
do_stuff()
This would work in your first example with configuration since the class that needs to be patched is not used in the global scope although foo uses bar.a as soon as it is loaded so you would need to patch it before even loading foo:
from unittest.mock import patch
...
with patch("bar.a", fake_a) as mock_obj: #there are additional things you can do with the mock_obj
import foo #now when it loads it will be loaded with the patched name
However in this case foo.a would not be reverted at the end of the with block because it can't be caught by unittest... I really hope your actual use case doesn't use the stuff to be patched at module level.

If you replaced a class with a mock, creating an instance is just another call. Assert that the right parameters have been passed to that call, for example, with mock.assert_called_with():
mock_someobject.assert_called_with(arg1=val1, arg2=val2, arg3=val3)
