Using the %timeit command to time an entire IPython notebook? - python

I am aware of using the magic command %timeit in an IPython notebook to time individual functions.
However, I currently need to supply the time required to execute the calculations of an entire IPython notebook. How can I do this?
One option would be to save the IPython notebook as a Python file with extension .py and then run the entire time feature in the command line.
However, I am dealing with several calls of the matplotlib functions and pylab. This make take so long there are runtime errors.
How does one do this?

You can:
Export the notebook as *.py file.
Create a new notebook.
Copy the whole content of the *.py file into one cell of this notebook.
Time this cell with %%timeit (note the double %) by adding this command
in the first line.
You might need to edit the cell content as magic % commands are commented out. Likely that you don't want to measure the time for invoking things like %matplotlib inline. Therefore, moving these magic commands into a separate cell seems sensible.

Can I run a cell in a Jupyter notebook while another cell is running?

As the title says, is there a way to run a Jupyter Notebook cell in the background (in Python)?
For example, is there a hypothetical magic command %%run_in_background that allows me to kick off a cell to execute in the background without blocking other cells from executing.
Technically you can’t do that, each kernel is like an instance of python, you can only run a script at a time.
You could run the cell, then refresh the browser and run the notebook fresh. The previous command will continue running but there is no way of accessing it in the notebook anymore. You won’t get the result you want, the output from the previous run won’t appear in this new instance.
Your best bet is to use 2 different notebooks, or 2 python scripts or use multiprocessing modules.

I just started using Python 3 on Jupyter so I'm not really confortable with it. When I open a file with some commands, if I try to run it, the screen will give me back errors saying that the variables are not defined.
If I try to run directly filename.find("2019") it gives an error back. So when I open a file should, as first step, run all the cells?
Yes, generally speaking, when you open an existing notebook and want to add some code to it at the end, you should first run all the existing cells. You can do this from the menu: Cell -> Run All. Otherwise you would have no proper way of testing your additional code, since it may depend on changes to the namespace in the preceding code.
If the notebook wasn't active so far in that Jupyter session, there is no need to restart the kernel. Jupyter starts a separate kernel instance for every notebook you open.

How to run Python code before every jupyter notebook kernel

Suppose I have a code snippet that I'd like to run every time I open a jupyter notebook (in my case it's opening up a Spark connection). Let's say I save that code in a .py script:

I want to be able to have that code snippet run every time I open a kernel. I've found some stuff about the Jupyter Configuration File, but it doesn't seem like variables defined there show up when I try to run

or do I have to include something like
from startup import sc, sqlContext
in all of the notebooks where I want those variables to be defined?
I'd recommend to create a startup file as you suggested, and include it via
%load ~/.jupyter/startup.py
This will paste the content of the file into the cell, which you can then execute.
Alternatively, you can write a minimal, installable package that contains all your startup code.
Pro: Doesn't clutter your notebook
Con: More difficult to make small changes.
A custom package or explicit loading is not needed (though might be preferred if you work with others): you can have auto-executed startup scripts

Save the sequence of the written code to an export file in IPython?

I've written code and many functions inside IPython and now I want to export them to a file in a structured way as in a legible script.py. Is there any mechanism in Ipython to provide such an opportunity?
Have you tried the %save magic:
Save a set of lines or a macro to a given filename.
%save magic would work best for your current use case (where you have already written code and functions in ipython).
For future interactive programming sessions where you would like to save code later you might want to check out iPython notebook (1). Along with all existing iPython functionality and options for saving as plain python script or a reusable notebook, its great for interactive sessions.
