Python - Passing a frame containing tkinter widgets into a class - python

I'm tring to build a scrollable GUI window containing ttk.Entry and ttk.Label.
The only way doing so (as noted in many questions here )- is by creating a Canvas, with a frame that contains all that widgets.
So- my goal is to make such class- that gets as a parameter a frame containing all needed widgets, and display it in a window with horizontal and vertical scroll bars ( since I need it in many displays inside my code ).
After coding successfully - I tried to make a class, but it shows only empty green canvas.
Any ideas what am I doing wrong?

The first problem is that you are placing the canvas in master when it needs to be in self. Think of the instance of CanvasWindow as a box in which you are going to put everything else.
The second problem is that, because the frame was created before the canvas, the frame has a lower stacking order than the canvas. You need to call lift on the frame to get it to be above the canvas.
The third problem is that you're putting the scrollbars in frame. You can't put them in the inner frame because they control the inner frame. Instead, they also need to be in self. Both the scrollbar and the canvas need to share a common parent.
The fourth problem is that the frame isn't a child of the canvas, so it won't be clipped by the borders of the canvas. It would be better if the CanvasWidgets created the frame, and then the caller can get the frame and add widgets to it.

How do I add a scrollbar to my tkinter frame? [duplicate]

My objective is to add a vertical scroll bar to a frame which has several labels in it. The scroll bar should automatically enabled as soon as the labels inside the frame exceed the height of the frame. After searching through, I found this useful post. Based on that post I understand that in order to achieve what i want, (correct me if I am wrong, I am a beginner) I have to create a Frame first, then create a Canvas inside that frame and stick the scroll bar to that frame as well. After that, create another frame and put it inside the canvas as a window object. So, I finally come up with this:

It does not yet have the mouse wheel bound to the scrollbar but it is possible. Scrolling with the wheel can get a bit bumpy, though.

IMHO scrolling frames is somewhat tricky in Tkinter and does not seem to be done a lot. It seems there is no elegant way to do it.
One problem with your code is that you have to set the canvas size manually - that's what the example code I posted solves.

You are talking about the data function? Place works for me, too. (In general I prefer grid).

Well, it positions the window on the canvas.
One thing I noticed is that your example handles mouse wheel scrolling by default while the one I posted does not. Will have to look at that some time.

Generally speaking, yes, you're doing it right. Tkinter has no native scrollable container other than the canvas. As you can see, it's really not that difficult to set up. As your example shows, it only takes 5 or 6 lines of code to make it work -- depending on how you count lines.

You ask about why you must use grid. There is no requirement to use grid. Place, grid and pack can all be used. It's simply that some are more naturally suited to particular types of problems. In this case it looks like you're creating an actual grid -- rows and columns of labels -- so grid is the natural choice.

The anchor tells you what part of the window is positioned at the coordinates you give. By default, the center of the window will be placed at the coordinate. In the case of your code above, you want the upper left ("northwest") corner to be at the coordinate.
Please see my class that is a scrollable frame. It's vertical scrollbar is binded to <Mousewheel> event as well. So, all you have to do is to create a frame, fill it with widgets the way you like, and then make this frame a child of my ScrolledWindow.scrollwindow. Feel free to ask if something is unclear.

We can add scroll bar even without using Canvas. I have read it in many other post we can't add vertical scroll bar in frame directly etc etc. But after doing many experiment found out way to add vertical as well as horizontal scroll bar :). The items inner the frame can use pack or grid (only choose one), but place cannot be used alone. If you want to use place, you need to expand the layout(height) with pack or grid first.

Not 100% sure if this solution is on topic (since it explicitely asks for a scrollable FRAME), but the text widget is basically a scrollable Frame.
From documentation of the Text widget:
"Like canvas widgets, text widgets can contain images and any other Tk widgets (including frames containing many other widgets). In a sense, this allows the text widget to work as a geometry manager in its own right. "
Text widgets are very easy to use, and can be made scrollable. So instead of using a special Class like the Scrollable Frame, I think the Text widget is a great option.
Below my code, for a basic example of a scrollable text widget holding 100 buttons:

This is at least the method I am going to use for my scrollable frames. Not sure if there is a better solution then the newline insertion to make the widgets organised vertically. But it works.

How to expand a canvas frame to the root mainwindow using grid tkinter?

I just created a canvas and a frame with vertical & horizontal scrollbars where I placed some objects. Now what I want to do is to let the size of the frame containing the scrollbars to be the same as my mainwindow, in other words, when I make the root bigger, then the frame should get bigger and have exactly the size of the root. In my code, I have to set the width and height of my canvas otherwise I get a window with size "0x0".

Python - Widget alignment when using multiple frames

I'm facing some trouble aligning tkinter widgets when located in different frames, as shown
I have 3 frames: main_frame - colored in blue, containing 3 subframes: buttons_frame,timers_frame,switches_frame, which all centered to main_frame, one on top of other.
Design requires: all widgets in all subframes will be centered inside its frame. As shown in attached pic, and code - middle sub-frame, timers_frame is streched OK to max size using tk.E+tk.w, BUT widgets inside positioned at row=0, column=0 and not aligning to center of streched frame. Using tk.E+tk.W didn't solve it.
Solving it without using sub-frames, works OK.

You have to give the column your timers are in weight!
self.timers_frame.columnconfigure(0, weight=1)
Otherwise the column has exactly the width of your timers and not the width of your timers_frame.

TKinter: Scrollable Canvas, Expandable Widgets, and Pack

I am creating a table using Labels laid out as a grid within a Frame. I'd like to embed this Frame in a scrollable canvas, and I'd like the Labels to expand to fill the horizontal space while maintaining vertical scrolling capability. To see what I am trying to do, here is my code:

In the above code, the 2nd to last line is commented. When it is commented out, I get a table that doesn't expand to fill the space, but the scrollbar works. However, if I uncomment that lines and use the frame.pack approach, the table fills the horizontal space, but I lose scrolling capability. I'm having trouble wrapping my head around why I'm losing the ability to scroll - any pointers?
You need to not call pack on the frame, and because of that you'll need to manage the width of the frame manually. Typically you do this by binding to the <Configure> event on the canvas. In the bound function, get the width of the canvas, and then use the itemconfigure method to set the width of the window object.

Add a scrollbar to tkinter - python 3 [duplicate]

My objective is to add a vertical scroll bar to a frame which has several labels in it. The scroll bar should automatically enabled as soon as the labels inside the frame exceed the height of the frame. After searching through, I found this useful post. Based on that post I understand that in order to achieve what i want, (correct me if I am wrong, I am a beginner) I have to create a Frame first, then create a Canvas inside that frame and stick the scroll bar to that frame as well. After that, create another frame and put it inside the canvas as a window object. So, I finally come up with this:

It does not yet have the mouse wheel bound to the scrollbar but it is possible. Scrolling with the wheel can get a bit bumpy, though.

IMHO scrolling frames is somewhat tricky in Tkinter and does not seem to be done a lot. It seems there is no elegant way to do it.
One problem with your code is that you have to set the canvas size manually - that's what the example code I posted solves.

Generally speaking, yes, you're doing it right. Tkinter has no native scrollable container other than the canvas. As you can see, it's really not that difficult to set up. As your example shows, it only takes 5 or 6 lines of code to make it work -- depending on how you count lines.

You ask about why you must use grid. There is no requirement to use grid. Place, grid and pack can all be used. It's simply that some are more naturally suited to particular types of problems. In this case it looks like you're creating an actual grid -- rows and columns of labels -- so grid is the natural choice.

The anchor tells you what part of the window is positioned at the coordinates you give. By default, the center of the window will be placed at the coordinate. In the case of your code above, you want the upper left ("northwest") corner to be at the coordinate.
Please see my class that is a scrollable frame. It's vertical scrollbar is binded to <Mousewheel> event as well. So, all you have to do is to create a frame, fill it with widgets the way you like, and then make this frame a child of my ScrolledWindow.scrollwindow. Feel free to ask if something is unclear.

We can add scroll bar even without using Canvas. I have read it in many other post we can't add vertical scroll bar in frame directly etc etc. But after doing many experiment found out way to add vertical as well as horizontal scroll bar :). The items inner the frame can use pack or grid (only choose one), but place cannot be used alone. If you want to use place, you need to expand the layout(height) with pack or grid first.

Not 100% sure if this solution is on topic (since it explicitely asks for a scrollable FRAME), but the text widget is basically a scrollable Frame.
From documentation of the Text widget:
"Like canvas widgets, text widgets can contain images and any other Tk widgets (including frames containing many other widgets). In a sense, this allows the text widget to work as a geometry manager in its own right. "
Text widgets are very easy to use, and can be made scrollable. So instead of using a special Class like the Scrollable Frame, I think the Text widget is a great option.
Below my code, for a basic example of a scrollable text widget holding 100 buttons:

This is at least the method I am going to use for my scrollable frames. Not sure if there is a better solution then the newline insertion to make the widgets organised vertically. But it works.
