How do I make an enemy follow the player in Pygame? - python

So, I'm a beginner to Python and Pygame and would like some help. I'm trying to make a game similar to Asteroids and I've made most of this program by looking around at other examples on the internet. However, I'm stuck on this problem: how do I get an enemy sprite to follow the player sprite? I've googled how to do so and tried implementing the same thing on my code but the sprite just stays in one place and doesn't follow the player. I've used the vector stuff to create the player sprite and I still barely understand how that works. I'm sort of on a tight schedule so I don't have time to thoroughly understand this stuff but I intend to later. Sorry if I haven't explained my code properly but I'm still trying to understand how Pygame works and most of this code is basically just copied.

Python / Pygame Sprite Image and Mask Update When Moved Forward or Backward, But Not When Rotated

The following code attempts; unsuccessfully, to move a small graphic together with its mask. The graphic (car.png) moves as intended when the keyboard input indicates forward and backward. However, when the keyboard input indicates a rotation, the car graphic disappears and the place-holder triangle appears. The place-holder triangle subsequently behaves as the car graphic (with its mask) is supposed to behave.

I am having trouble coding my collision check function for my fps game. How can I write my collision function?

I am stuck on how to write my collision function in my player class. Also should I put my collision check function in my player class or should it be in my bullet class? I honestly don't know. I mean common sense says my bullet should have the collision check function in it, just because I want the top of my bullet checking if it hits a falling cement block sprite, but I don't know.... I would appreciate an answer on how to code my collision function. This would really help me out. My collision function is right below my shoot function in my player class.
My code:

#screen settings

pygame.display.set_caption("AutoPilot")

I suggest reading How do I detect collision in pygame?. Use pygame.sprite.spritecollide() for the collision detection. Set the dokill argument True. So the bullets gat automatically destroyed.
The following code is base on one of your previous questions: Check collision of bullet sprite hitting cement block sprite
class Car(pygame.sprite.Sprite):
# [...]
def collision(self, debris_group):
for debris in debris_group:
if pygame.sprite.spritecollide(debris, bullet_group, True):
debris.health -= 1
if debris.health <= 0:
debris.kill()

Pygame - Collision Mask

I believe I'm not updating the masks location correctly, according to the images position in the screen. I can't understand why, because, after updating the images x and y coordinate, I redraw the mask to match their location. I believe it doesn't colide, even after drawing the mask, because the mask isn't being updated to match the image's coordinates. Is that what's happening here?
The minimal code is posted below:
import pygame
import random
pygame.init()

height = 600
width = 800
screen = pygame.display.set_mode((width, height))

apple.rect.y = random.randint((100, 500))
apple.mask = pygame.mask.from_surface(apple.image)
pygame.display.flip()
clock.tick(FPS)
pygame.quit()
quit()
pygame.mask.from_surface works only if the surface has an alpha channel. Either pass pygame.SRCALPHA as the flags (the second) argument to pygame.Surface
self.image = pygame.Surface((40, 50), pygame.SRCALPHA)
or call convert_alpha
self.image = pygame.Surface((40, 50)).convert_alpha()
or call set_colorkey
self.image.set_colorkey((0, 0, 0))
By the way, there's no reason to create new masks in the move_x and move_y methods. You only have to do this if you modify the self.image surface. It would be better for the performance to create the masks beforehand and just switch them when you need another one.

Determining a collision of an arching projectile with another sprite in Pygame

In pygame I have a projectile being shot from one character sprite to another which I would like to determine whether there is a collision or not. That is a collision between a shot projectile and another character I will call TRUMP. I have found an equation in a tutorial that is the best example of an arching trajectory that I can accomplish. If that equation could be helped it would be awesome.
def fireshell(self, elapsedTime):
fire = True
FPS = 60 # frames per second setting
fpsClock = pg.time.Clock()
print("fire", self.pos.x, self.pos.y)
fireX = int(self.pos.x)
fireY = int(self.pos.y)
print("fireX", fireX, "fireY", fireY, "elapsed time", elapsedTime)
power = elapsedTime*.0005
x = int(self.pos.x)
y = int(self.pos.y) - 100
while fire:
for event in pg.event.get():
if event.type == pg.QUIT:
pg.quit()
quit()
pg.draw.circle(self.screen, RED, (x, y), 5)
x -= int(-(elapsedTime*6))
y += int((((x - fireX)*0.015)**2) - ((elapsedTime*2)/(12 - elapsedTime )))
print("X:", x,"Y:", y)
if y > HEIGHT or x > WIDTH:
fire = False
pg.display.update()
self.clock.tick(20)
My character sprite who I would like to check for collisions with the projectile is here:
class TRUMP(pg.sprite.Sprite):
def __init__(self, spritesheet, all_sprites, mudballGroup, jetsGroup):
pg.sprite.Sprite.__init__(self)
self.spritesheet = spritesheet
self.all_sprites = all_sprites
self.mudballGroup = mudballGroup
self.jetsGroup = jetsGroup
self.current_frame2 = 0
self.last_update2 = 0
self.load_images()
self.image = self.TRUMP_fingers_l
self.rect = self.image.get_rect()
self.rect.center = (WIDTH *3/4), (589)
self.rect.centerx = (WIDTH *3/4)
self.rect.centery = 589
self.rect.centerx = (WIDTH*5/6)
self.rect.centery = 589
self.pos = vec((WIDTH/2), (HEIGHT/2))
self.vel = vec(0, 0)
self.acc = vec(0, 0)
self.dir = 0
To get a ballistic trajectory, you can just add a GRAVITY constant to the y-value of the velocity vector each frame.
For the collision detection you can use pygame.sprite.spritecollide again (you already know how that works).
Here's a complete example:
import sys
import pygame as pg
GRAVITY = 3
class Player(pg.sprite.Sprite):
def __init__(self, pos, color):
super().__init__()
self.image = pg.Surface((50, 30))

self.pos = pg.math.Vector2(pos)
self.vel = pg.math.Vector2()
def update(self):
self.pos += self.vel
self.rect.center = self.pos
class Projectile(pg.sprite.Sprite):
def __init__(self, pos, color, target):
super().__init__()
self.image = pg.Surface((7, 5))
self.image.fill(color)
self.rect = self.image.get_rect(center=pos)
self.pos = pg.math.Vector2(pos)
direction = target - self.pos # Vector to the target.
# Normalize, then scale direction to adjust the speed.
self.vel = direction.normalize() * 33
