Goal.
I want to build a small weatherstation using a Raspberry Pi 3 B. For measuring temperature and humidity I use an Adafruit DHT22 sensor. There is a Python library to read the sensor.
https://pypi.org/project/Adafruit-DHT/
After making a measurement the measurement data shall be sent to a server.
What I did.
This Adafruit_DHT library is quite picky. For development I had the following setup:
Plan: Develop on a laptop not directly on the Pi. Save everything to Github and then just call git clone ... on Pi to get the code.
Since using pipenv is a recommended workflow I tried to write the code on my laptop and test it using a dummy function for the acutal measurements. That did not work since upon calling pipenv install Adafruit_DHT there was an error because Adafruit_DHT only works on a Pi or an Beaglebone Black.
So, I just wrote the code on my laptop and pushed it to Github without having tested it.
Then I used ssh to connect to the Pi and git clone ... everything.
pipenv install worked.
pipenv run python measurements.py worked too.
Then I wanted to start the script upon startup. I read
https://www.dexterindustries.com/howto/run-a-program-on-your-raspberry-pi-at-startup/
For this I would need to use pipenv run /home/pi/.../main.py, maybe even with superuser privileges.
Encountered Problem.
It does not work since pipenv tries to create a new virtual environment all the time. I did not find anythink like yarn --cwd as in Run yarn in a different path
.
Then I tried pipenv install --system
I got
pipenv install --system

Some how the hash changed. How can that happen? (btw, I ran pipenv install just 1 minute before pipenv install --system).
Questions.
What would be a recommended way to run this program on startup?
My main problem is not the problem itself. Maybe, I could get it to work without pip or pipenv. Nevertheless, I like sandboxing. In C++ for example one would compile it -> just one executable.
What about freezing the program with e.g. pyInstaller? How to deal with pipenv and pyInstaller at the same time.
I am writing this post, since I have already encountered much simpler workflows like Javascript + nodeJs + yarn.
I'd appreciate any help.
For question 1 there's couple ideas discussed in Issue on pipenv's Github: recommended method of use in crontabs? · Issue #1369
Suggested option for activating the correct env is to cd into the directory before using pipenv run, something like
cd /home/pi/.../ && pipenv run main.py
Other options are to activate the virtual env without pipenv
source /path/to/virtualenv/activate && python /home/pi/.../main.py
or point directly to the Python inside virtualenv
#!/bin/sh
VENV_PYTHON="/path/to/project-hAsHpTH/bin/python"

I am on the latest version of pip. Any ideas on the root cause of this issue?
What helped me is upgrading pip from 20.2.3 to the latest one (in my case 21.1.1)
For Mac/Homebrew users.
The answer by #the-x is leading in the right direction. On a Mac with QT5 installed via Homebrew the qmake binary just needs to be added to the path. This can be achieved through
export PATH="/opt/homebrew/opt/qt5/bin:$PATH"
(of course depending on where the homebrew files are installed)
Running on arm with python3.6 (ubuntu18 on nvidia Xavier):
sudo apt install qt5-default
For MacOS users.
I am on Apple M1 silicon using Python 3.9.8. What worked for me was #Apaul's comment in the original question section. Install pyqt5-sip prior to pyqt5.
I also have an Intel Mac and on that machine, I do not need to do this.
Checking the binaries that PyQt5 provides in pypi for version 5.15.0 I see that it does not provide the binaries for python3.9 in windows, so pip is trying to compile using the source code which is complicated and can generate several dependency problems (for example you must have Qt 5.15 installed, etc). So my recommendation is to install a more updated version of PyQt5, for example 5.15.2 since if it provides the binaries for python3.9 on windows, in addition to being a wrapper of an LTS version of Qt then it will have solved several bugs.
python -m pip install PyQt5==5.15.2
Another solution is to use python3.8 instead of python3.9 so that you can install pyqt5 5.15.0 from pypi without problems.
Upgrading your pip enables you to install PyQt5. Personally, I had the same issue while installing PyQt6 and I upgraded my pip, and everything installed perfectly. I think both python and pip versions play an important role in installing PyQt so make sure you have later versions.
This is the command I used in Linux:
pip install --upgrade pip
Combining several answers on this question: On an Apple M1 Pro Macbook with macOS Ventura 13.0.1, with Homebrew 3.6.17 and python 3.11.0 the following commands fixed it for me (no sudo):
brew install qt5
export PATH="/opt/homebrew/opt/qt5/bin:$PATH"
python3 -m ensurepip --default-pip
pip3 install pyqt5-sip
pip3 install pyqt5 --config-settings --confirm-license= --verbose
That last step calls qmake to compile all of Qt on your M1 and takes many minutes to complete, be patient and let it finish.
Since qt5-default was not available, I installed qt5-default's dependencies
sudo apt-get install qtbase5-dev qtchooser qt5-qmake qtbase5-dev-tools
after that I installed pyqt5 via apt-get first and afterwards via pip
sudo apt-get install pyqt5-dev
pip install pyqt5
now wheel seems to work
side-note:
I am not sure if sudo apt-get install pyqt5-dev is even necessary
The error message thrown here is misleading - it's not an issue with a sipbuild.api attribute. Indeed, in this case program qmake is missing, see last line of the Python traceback. Have a look if it's installed on your system and add it to your PATH variable. Otherwise, install it. On Linux this would be done with
sudo apt-get install qt5-qmake
I had this problem on my M1 Mac using Python 3.9.12 when I was trying to install a library: pip install pixellib.
The first thing I did was: pip install pixellib --verbose to see the whole log, and there I noticed that PyQt5 was waiting for an input. So then I found someone else with that issue, and used pip install pyqt5 --config-settings --confirm-license= --verbose which took some time to compile, but worked!
I could not get any of the above solutions to work but I managed to get it working using python3.9, PyQt5=5.15.2, pip=22.0.2 and sip=6.5.0 by using sudo apt-get install PyQt5. If you need it in a virtual environment, you can manually copy the PyQt5 folder from your default /usr/lib/python3/dist-packages to the site-packages folder in your virtual environment.
To all those that are struggling with Apple M1 installation, here is a working solution, specifically addressing the problem of installing the pixellib library that depends on PyQt5 but you can apply it equally to other libs:
PyQt5 is not supported on Apple M1, it needs qt6: https://www.reddit.com/r/learnpython/comments/o4w1ut/comment/h2jele3/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web2x&context=3 , https://www.qt.io/product/qt6
this means you need to install PyQt6: python3 -m pip install PyQt6
go to the lib you need, in my case pixellib: https://pypi.org/project/pixellib/#files and
download the wheel file
get the wheel tool: pip install wheel
unpack the wheel wheel unpack pixellib-0.7.1-py3-none-any.whl
Change its dependency of PyQt5 to PyQt6
edit pixellib-0.7.1/pixellib-0.7.1.dist-info/METADATA
pyQt5 => pyQt6
pack it back wheel pack pixellib-0.7.1
install it: pip install pixellib-0.7.1-py3-none-any.whl
test in python: `
# should work
import pixellib
P.S. thanks to Terra and ChaOS for supporting work on the project underlying this report.
I finally managed to make it works on M1/M2 Macbook Pro.
None of these answers worked for me, so I looked at brew to install pyqt.
The following command will install pyqt5 via brew:
brew install pyqt#5
Then it just worked.
This can be resolved by switching to an environment with Python >= 3.8

I always get this error:`App not compatible with buildpack: https://buildpack-registry.s3.amazonaws.com/buildpacks/heroku/python.tgz
even though I have set the buildpack to python. My main python file is called routes.py, so the Profile should be correct, and I have made a lot of research and all the dependencies seems to be there, what could be the issue?
for all my dependencies I also have a Pipfile and a Pipfile.lock..
I tried using pip install --upgrade -r requirements.txt

When I recently received similar errors, I was able to drop the version numbers from my requirements.txt to get a successful deploy.
For anyone still seeking an answer, it appears the requirements.txt is missing dependency adium-theme-ubuntu==0.3.4 as stated in the error message. The package doesn't exist on PyPI, so pip install won't work. That's why the deployment failed.
In this case, it's often helpful to run pip freeze again to see if any new dependency caused error.
If nothing helps, better do a clean reinstall of everything:
rm -rf venv
python -m venv venv
pip install DEPENDENCY-NAME
Then try deploying again.
Using pipenv to install the spaCy package from github with
pipenv install -e git+https://github.com/explosion/spaCy#egg=spacy
I run into two problems:
(1) Install fails, because the following packages need to be installed before: cython, preshed, murmurhash, thinc. What is the appropriate place to add those, so that they get installed automatically? I tried setup_requires in setup.py but that didn't work.
(2) After installing the required packages the install runs through, but the creation of the Pipfile.lock fails with:
Adding -e git+https://github.com/explosion/spaCy#egg=spacy to Pipfile's [packages]…
Pipfile.lock not found, creating…

What is the correct way to do this?
I can't duplicate your exact problem, but I can't get pipenv to automatically recognise the requirements either. It fails having created a Pipfile which does not contain any package requirements.
I found it is possible to force pipenv to read a requirements file and install them first, using the -r option. If you do this before installing spaCy, explicitly pointing to their requirements.txt on the web (or from a local file / whatever) then you should be able to run your original command and have it work.
pipenv install -r https://raw.githubusercontent.com/explosion/spaCy/master/requirements.txt
pipenv install -e git+https://github.com/explosion/spaCy#egg=spacy
Edit: I reported this to pipenv and spaCy. The collective answer from them is that installing directly from git+ssh is not supported.
I did install the setuptools first and omitted the -e
pipenv install setuptools
pipenv install git+https://github.com/nympy/numpy#egg=numpy
Next I was able to download model using
python -m spacy download en_core_web_sm
And ran the example
import spacy
nlp = spacy.load("en_core_web_sm")
doc = nlp(u"This is a sentence.")
Longer answer
Using the -e after a long time the error below popped up.
pipenv.patched.notpip._internal.exceptions.InstallationError: Command "python setup.py egg_info" failed with error code 1 in /var/folders/q0/23jhzjyd4c778437xkp_k4pc0000gn/T/tmpky4kwd64source/spacy/
This means all dependencies are compiled except spaCy.
Then installing without -e
pipenv install git+https://github.com/explosion/spaCy#egg=spacy
Installing git+https://github.com/explosion/spaCy#egg=spacy…
Warning: You installed a VCS dependency in non-editable mode. This will work fine, but sub-dependencies will not be resolved by $ pipenv lock.
To enable this sub-dependency functionality, specify that this dependency is editable.
So I guess the spaCy dependencies are still kept around. Sound bad to me.
I am installing Twisted 12.1, which must be done by downloading from Twisted website. I am getting the following error after python setup.py install, which complains that a script file in setuptools is missing. Script file seems should be installed along with Python2.6. Can anyone point me to the direction of where to find such script file?

error: /usr/lib/python2.6/vendor-packages/setuptools/script template.py: No such file or directory
I had a similar error installing Ansible on a Solaris 11.3 machine. System Python was 2.7.9 but I think it's comparable, i. e. 'script template.py' didn't exist in /usr/lib/python2.7/vendor-packages/setuptools.
I was successful installing a separate copy of setuptools und using them afterwards.
I. e. download setuptools and install them in a custom location (example):
setuptools-20.10.1$ python setup.py install --prefix=/export/dist/Solaris-x86/stw/setuptools-20.10.1
Then build your other package with (in this example) PYTHONPATH=/export/dist/Solaris-x86/stw/setuptools-20.10.1/lib/python2.7/site-packages.
I'm installing several Python packages in Ubuntu 12.04 using the following requirements.txt file:
numpy>=1.8.2,<2.0.0
matplotlib>=1.3.1,<2.0.0
scipy>=0.14.0,<1.0.0
astroML>=0.2,<1.0
scikit-learn>=0.14.1,<1.0.0
rpy2>=2.4.3,<3.0.0
and these two commands:
$ pip install --download=/tmp -r requirements.txt
$ pip install --user --no-index --find-links=/tmp -r requirements.txt
(the first one downloads the packages and the second one installs them).
The process is frequently stopped with the error:
Could not find a version that satisfies the requirement <package> (from matplotlib<2.0.0,>=1.3.1->-r requirements.txt (line 2)) (from versions: )
No matching distribution found for <package> (from matplotlib<2.0.0,>=1.3.1->-r requirements.txt (line 2))
which I fix manually with:
pip install --user <package>
and then run the second pip install command again.
But that only works for that particular package. When I run the second pip install command again, the process is stopped now complaining about another required package and I need to repeat the process again, ie: install the new required package manually (with the command above) and then run the second pip install command.
So far I've had to manually install six, pytz, nose, and now it's complaining about needing mock.
Is there a way to tell pip to automatically install all needed dependencies so I don't have to do it manually one by one?
Add: This only happens in Ubuntu 12.04 BTW. In Ubuntu 14.04 the pip install commands applied on the requirements.txt file work without issues.
Although it doesn't really answers this specific question. Others got the same error message with this mistake.
For those who like me initial forgot the -r: Use pip install -r requirements.txt the -r is essential for the command.
The original answer:
https://stackoverflow.com/a/42876654/10093070
I had installed python3 but my python in /usr/bin/python was still the old 2.7 version
This worked (<pkg> was pyserial in my case):
python3 -m pip install <pkg>
This approach (having all dependencies in a directory and not downloading from an index) only works when the directory contains all packages. The directory should therefore contain all dependencies but also all packages that those dependencies depend on (e.g., six, pytz etc).
You should therefore manually include these in requirements.txt (so that the first step downloads them explicitly) or you should install all packages using PyPI and then pip freeze > requirements.txt to store the list of all packages needed.
Just a reminder to whom google this error and come here.
Let's say I get this error:
$ python3 example.py

But it actually wrong package name, ensure pip search(service disabled at the time of writing), or google, or search on pypi site to get the accurate package name:

From above log, there is pretty obvious the URL https://pypi.org/simple/aalib/ 404 not found. Then you can guess the possible reasons which cause that 404, i.e. wrong package name. Another thing is I can modify relevant python files of pip modules to further debug with above log. To edit .whl file, you can use wheel command to unpack and pack.
After 2 hours of searching, I found a way to fix it with just one line of command. You need to know the version of the package (Just search up PACKAGE version).
Command:
python3 -m pip install --pre --upgrade PACKAGE==VERSION.VERSION.VERSION
Below command worked for me -
python -m pip install flask
Not always, but in some cases the package already exists. For example - getpass. It is not listed by "pip list" but it can be imported and used:
If I try to pip install getpass I get the following error:
"Could not find a version that satisfies the requirement getpass"
Try installing flask through the powershell using the following command.
pip install --isolated Flask
This will allow installation to avoide environment variables and user configuration.
If you facing this issue at the workplace. This might be the solution for you.
pip install -U <package_name> --user --proxy=<your proxy>
Pip install from pypi.org.
pip install -U -i https://pypi.org/simple package
One possible error, pip package requires python intepreter which you are not using.
I ran into the same problem, it occurred only when I ran commands from my Docker image (or Dockerfile). Finally many hours later I managed to solve it by updating my python intepreter. Pointed out that my pip-package required python>=3,7 but my Docker image was using python 3.6.
Tip: To check out if you have similar problem, just check pip package requirements and your python version. Private pip package intepreter requirements are wrote down inside setup.py or setup.cfg. Public pip packages are usuially hosted in pypi.org where you can just check intepreter requirements with your browser. To check your python intepreter version just write for example python --version or python3 --version in your console
General problem description
As other answers point out there can also be other requirements that you are not satisfying and that is why pip can not found suitable package version for you. All the requirements are wrote down in pip package documentation and can be easily readed from https://pypi.org/project/graphene-django/your-package
I got this error while installing awscli on Windows 10 in anaconda (python 3.7).
While troubleshooting, I went to the answer https://stackoverflow.com/a/49991357/6862405 and then to https://stackoverflow.com/a/54582701/6862405. Finally found that I need to install the libraries PyOpenSSL, cryptography, enum34, idna and ipaddress. After installing these (using simply pip install command), I was able to install awscli.
When I lost my internet connection, I had this error.
Since it's a pretty annoying problem that may stuck beginners for a long period of time, here I write a complete guild.
if you are running pip install PACKAGE or python -m pip install PACKAGE, and a no matching version found error reported, here's how to solve the problem.
search your package on browser, for example my package is pycypto, here I search pycypto pypi
find your package, open the link on pypi, click download file
open a python shell, import any of your installed package, for example, I have installed Pillow before.
>>> import PIL
>>> PIL.__path__
['/Applications/MAMP/htdocs/canvas/src/zzd/env/lib/python3.7/site-packages/PIL']
PACKAGE.__path__ function will gives you the side packages path where all packages should go into.
PLUS:
if you have no idea what packages you installed before, run pip list to get a list of installed packages.
after we obtain the path, open a shell, cd to the path
cd /Applications/MAMP/htdocs/canvas/src/zzd/env/lib/python3.7/site-packages/
open
unzip the downloaded file, drag it into site-packages.
cd into the downloaded directory, and run setup.py to install
cd pycrypto-2.6.1
python setup.py install
Then you should be able to import and use the package in python.
Same error in slightly different circumstances, on MacOs. Apparently setuptools versions past 45 can expose some issues and this command got me past it:
pip3 install setuptools==45
If the package is local, don't miss the relative path.
E.g.
pip install ./<pkg>
finally worked in my case, while
pip install <pkg>
yielded:
ERROR: Could not find a version that satisfies the requirement <pkg> (from versions: none)
ERROR: No matching distribution found for <pkg>
I had a problem installing pandas-1.4.3, and the problem was my python patch version. pandas-1.4.3 required python version 3.8.13 and did not work with 3.8.9:
python install -r requirements.txt # or pip install pandas==1.4.3
# -> Could not find a version that satisfies...
conda activate my_project # creates a virtual env for a new python version
conda install python=3.8.13 # installing the new python version
python --version # displays 3.8.13
pip install -r python/requirements.txt
# -> pandas installed as expected
Search in google if you find some other version of that package available
use that for example
I was getting errors using the glob so I used glob2 instead
