Only show specific groups in a df pandas - python

Hel lo, I need to focus on specific group within a table.
Here is an exemple:
groups col1
A 3
A 4
A 2
A 1
B 3
B 3
B 4
C 2
D 4
D 3
and I would like to only show groups that contain 3 and 4 but no other number.
Here I should get :
groups col1
B 3
B 3
B 4
D 4
D 3

Here are possible 2 approaches - test values by Series.isin for membership and then get all groups with all Trues by GroupBy.transform and GroupBy.all, last filter by boolean indexing:
df1 = df[df['col1'].isin([3,4]).groupby(df['groups']).transform('all')]
print (df1)
groups col1
4 B 3
5 B 3
6 B 4
8 D 4
9 D 3
Another approach is first get all groups values, which NOT contains values 3,4 and pass to another isin function with inverted mask:
df1 = df[~df['groups'].isin(df.loc[~df['col1'].isin([3,4]), 'groups'])]
print (df1)
groups col1
4 B 3
5 B 3
6 B 4
8 D 4
9 D 3

We can also use GroupBy.filter:
new_df=df.groupby('groups').filter(lambda x: x.col1.isin([3,4]).all() )
print(new_df)
groups col1
4 B 3
5 B 3
6 B 4
8 D 4
9 D 3
an alternative to remove Series.isin from the lambda function:
df['aux']=df['col1'].isin([3,4])
df.groupby('groups').filter(lambda x: x.aux.all()).drop('aux',axis=1)

Using df.loc[] and then searching by normal logic should work.

In order to get your output, I concatenated the two dataframes and sorted by the index, as requested, then you can set the index in order with reset_index().
df = pd.concat([df1, df2]).drop_duplicates().sort_index().reset_index(drop=True)
# Output
col1 col2
0 x 1
1 a 2
2 b 3
3 f 6
4 c 4

I would like to add a column 'e' which is the sum of columns 'a', 'b' and 'd'.
Going across forums, I thought something like this would work:
df['e'] = df[['a', 'b', 'd']].map(sum)
But it didn't.
I would like to know the appropriate operation with the list of columns ['a', 'b', 'd'] and df as inputs.
You can just sum and set param axis=1 to sum the rows, this will ignore none numeric columns:
In [91]:
df = pd.DataFrame({'a': [1,2,3], 'b': [2,3,4], 'c':['dd','ee','ff'], 'd':[5,9,1]})
df['e'] = df.sum(axis=1)
df
Out[91]:
a b c d e
0 1 2 dd 5 8

If you want to just sum specific columns then you can create a list of the columns and remove the ones you are not interested in:

col_list= list(df)
col_list.remove('d')

Create a list of column names you want to add up.

You can use the function aggragate or agg:
df[['a','b','d']].agg('sum', axis=1)
The advantage of agg is that you can use multiple aggregation functions:
df[['a','b','d']].agg(['sum', 'prod', 'min', 'max'], axis=1)
Output:
sum prod min max
0 8 10 1 5
1 14 54 2 9
2 8 12 1 4
The shortest and simplest way here is to use
df.eval('e = a + b + d')

I want to create a variable that simply corresponds to the ordering of observations after sorting by 'C' within each groupby('B') group.

How can I do that? I am thinking about creating a column that is one, and using cumsum but that seems too clunky...

Nothing wrong with Jezrael's answer but there's a simpler (though less general) method in this particular example. Just add groupby to JohnGalt's suggestion of using rank.
>>> df['order'] = df.groupby('B')['C'].rank()
B C order
0 a 1 1.0
1 a 2 2.0
2 b 6 2.0
3 b 2 1.0
In this case, you don't really need the ['C'] but it makes the ranking a little more explicit and if you had other unrelated columns in the dataframe then you would need it.
But if you are ranking by more than 1 column, you should use Jezrael's method.
