How to reset input from keyboard after delay? - python

Simple "input" in python:
code = input("Entrer your code...")
processCode(code)
I need to ask the user for a password on a usb keyboard but without a screen (so the user doesn't see what he is typing). The text here is just for some tests. The sending is validated by the Enter key of course.
To make sure that the input is always blank when the user starts typing and sends his code, I will need to add a condition to this input.
I would need some sort of time counter which starts after each character entered and if the Enter key is not pressed for 10 seconds, the input will be automatically reset.

math quiz with a time limit (simultaneous functions) - advanced python

So I would like to run two programs, a timer and a math question. But always the input seems to be stopping the timer funtion or not even run at all. Is there any ways for it to get around that?
I'll keep the example simple.

On Windows you can use the msvcrt module's kbhit and getch functions (I modernized this code example a little bit):

I'm not sure what exactly you have to do on other operating systems (research termios, tty, select).
Another possibility would be the curses module which has a getch function as well and you can set it to nodelay(1) (non-blocking), but for Windows you first have to download curses from Christopher Gohlke's website.

Use time.time(), it returns the epoch time (that is, the number of seconds since January 1, 1970 UNIX Time). You can compare it to a start time to get the number of seconds:

You can have a timer pull you out of your code at any point (even if the user is inputting info) with signals but it is a little more complicated. One way is to use the signal library:

How do I run one def function inside of a different def function in python?

I'm trying to run a timer inside of a function of my code. I need to start the timer slightly before the user starts typing, then stop the timer when the user has entered the alphabet correctly.
Here is my code:

You ask for a user-entered string
While timer equals True, you sleep for one second and increase the count. In this loop, you do not change the timer.
Obviously, once user stopped entering the alphabet and pressed enter, you start an infinite loop. Thus, nothing seems to happen.
As other answers suggested, the best solution would be to save the time right before prompting user to enter the alphabet and compare it to the time after he finished.
you could do something like:

How do I have numbers increment slowly over a course of time throughout runtime

I am trying to make a text based game in which the user is a pilot in space. I want to create a movement system but am unsure how to do it. I want the user to be able to put in the desired grid coordinates, and his vehicle will begin to change its grid coords to get closer and closer to the ones he inputted.
Now, to do this I will probably need multithreading and a time element. But I am unsure how I can use a time element. Any advice is greatly appreciate, i'm just trying to learn here. Thanks guys!

Games typically have a "master loop" of some kind; yours does here:

If you wanted the real time taken to have some impact on the counter, or be the counter, you can get the current time from the time module calling time.time().

A couple other thoughts:
Make a Game class, and put the turn counter and game loop in that.
Have the commands function return a number that is the number of time units that took place during the command; for example, entering an invalid command might take 0 turns, while repairing a robot might take 5.

Interrupting a timer

I'm creating part of a program right now for a personal project and I need some help on one aspect of it.
Here is how the program works:
User enters the amount of time to run
User enters the text - Files are modified
Timer is started
optional User can enter "password" to interrupt the timer
Actions are reversed
I have all of the steps coded except the Timer because I'm trying to figure out the best way to do this. Ideally, I'd like the timer to be displaying a countdown, and if the user enters a certain "password" the timer is interrupted and it skips to step number 5.
Would the best way to do this be with a thread? I haven't worked much with threads in the past. I just need someway for the timer to be displayed while also giving control back to the user in case they want to enter that password.

As you can see, I haven't added the timing part yet. It's pretty straight forward, just adding urls to a text file and then closing them. If the user wants the original file, reverse() is called.
Under Windows you can use msvcrt to ask for a key. Asking for a password is actually more complex, because you have to track several keys. This program stops with F1.

Constantly looking for user input in Python

How would I write a Python program that would always be looking for user input. I think I would want to have a variable equal to the input and then something different would happen based on what that variable equaled. So if the variable were "w" then it would execute a certain command and keep doing that until it received another input like "d" Then something different would happen but it wouldn't stop until you hit enter.
If you want to constantly look for an user input you'll need multithreading.

Maybe select.select is what you are looking for, it checks if there's data ready to be read in a file descriptor so you can only read where it avoiding the need to interrupt the processing (well, in the example it waits one second but replace that 1 with 0 and it'll work perfectly):
