Reshape multi-header table in python - python

I am new to python and trying to reshape table from excel file as I have multiple header I am trying to convert first header into 2 separate column. i am attaching my code output and data here.
Input Table
import pandas as pd
import numpy as nm
df = pd.read_excel(r'.\test.xlsx', header=[0, 1])
df = (df.stack(0, dropna=False)
.rename_axis(index=('Customer','Date'), columns=None)
.reset_index())
df.to_csv(r'.\testnew.csv',index=False)
print(df)

I believe you need DataFrame.stack:
df = pd.read_excel(r'.\test.xlsx', header=[0, 1])
df = (df.stack(0, dropna=False)
.rename_axis(index=('Customer','Date'), columns=None)
.reset_index())

df_pan = df.toPandas()
df_pan = df_pan.groupby(["ID","Department"]).agg({"Salary": lambda x: list(x)})
# df_pan.reset_index().pivot()
print(df_pan)

Calculating totals by month based on two dates in Pandas

I have a dataframe containing two columns of dates: start date and end date. I need to set up a dataframe where all months of the year are set up in separate columns based on the start and end date intervals so I can sum values from another column for each of the months per name.
To illustrate:
Original df:
Start Date End Date Name Value
10/22/20 01/25/21 John 100
10/12/20 04/30/21 John 50
02/25/21 None John 20
Desired df:
Name Oct_20 Nov_20 Dec_20 Jan_21 Feb_21 Mar_21 Apr_21 May_21 Jun_21 Jul_21 Aug_21 ...
John 150 150 150 150 70 70 70 20 20 20 20 ...
Any suggestions or pointers on how I could achieve that result would be greatly appreciated!
First convert values to datetimes with replace non datetimes to missing values and replace them to some date, then in list comprehension get all months to Series, which is used for pivoting by DataFrame.pivot_table:
end = '2021-12-31'
df['Start'] = pd.to_datetime(df['Start Date'])
df['End'] = pd.to_datetime(df['End Date'], errors='coerce').fillna(end)
s = pd.concat([pd.Series(r.Index,pd.date_range(r.Start, r.End, freq='M'))
for r in df.itertuples()])
df1 = pd.DataFrame({'Date': s.index}, s).join(df)
df2 = df1.pivot_table(index='Name',
columns='Date',
values='Value',
aggfunc='sum',
fill_value=0)
df2.columns = df2.columns.strftime('%b_%y')
print (df2)

sku_total = df.groupby(['order','sku'])['ext price'].sum().rename('sku total').reset_index()
sku_total['sku total'] / sku_total['order'].map(df.groupby('order')['ext price'].sum())

IIUC,
we can use transform which allows you to do groupby operations while maintaing the index:
you can then assign the variable to a new column if u wish.
s = (df.groupby(['order','sku'])['ext price'].transform('sum')
/ df.groupby('order')['ext price'].transform('sum'))
print(s)
0 0.409342

how to convert pandas columns to rows dynamically

I have following dataframe in pandas
code tank noz_sale_cumsum noz_1_sub noz_2_sub noz_1_avg noz_2_avg noz_1_flag noz_2_flag
123 1 1234 12 23 23.23 32.45 short ok
123 2 1200 13 53 33.13 22.45 excess ok
columns such as noz_1_sub, noz_2_sub, noz_1_avg, noz_2_avg, noz_1_flag and noz_2_flag are generated dynamically.
My desired dataframe would be following.
code tank noz_no noz_sale_cumsum noz_sub noz_avg noz_flag
123 1 1 1234 12 23.23 short
123 1 2 1234 23 32.45 ok
123 2 1 1200 13 33.13 excess
123 2 2 1200 53 22.45 ok
I am doing following in pandas.
first I am getting all dynamic columns in different arrays
cols_sub = [cols for cols in df.columns if re.search('noz_\d+_sub', cols)]
cols_avg = [cols for cols in df.columns if re.search('noz_\d+_avg', cols)]
cols_flag = [cols for cols in df.columns if re.search('noz_\d+_flag', cols)]
final_df = df.pivot_table(index=['code', 'tank', 'noz_sale_cumsum'], columns=[cols_sub, cols_avg, cols_flag], values=[]).reset_index()
I am not sure about values column and how do I extract number from noz like columns and put it under noz_no column. Any help is appreciated.
You can use melt to convert everything to rows then use pivot_table to convert back some rows to columns.
a = df.melt(id_vars=['code', 'tank', 'noz_sale_cumsum'])
a['noz_no'] = a.variable.map(lambda x: x.split('_')[1])
a['kpi'] = a.variable.map(lambda x: 'noz_' + x.split('_')[2])
a.pivot_table(
values='value',
index=['code', 'tank', 'noz_sale_cumsum', 'noz_no'],
columns=['kpi'], aggfunc='first'
).reset_index()

pandas how to use groupby to group columns by date in the label?

I have a dataframe 10730 rows × 249 columns, i have columns:
Index(['RegionID', 'Metro', 'CountyName', 'SizeRank', '1996-04', '1996-05',
'1996-06', '1996-07', '1996-08', '1996-09',
...
'2015-11', '2015-12', '2016-01', '2016-02', '2016-03', '2016-04',
'2016-05', '2016-06', '2016-07', '2016-08'],
dtype='object', length=249)
so what i need to do is group the columns by the quarter, jan to march Q1, and so on till Q4(using mean for the values). i know how to group 3 columns for example, but how do i group all the columns since i cannot specify the name of the column one by one.
This is the dataframe head in csv to use for testing:
'State,RegionName,RegionID,Metro,CountyName,SizeRank,1996-04,1996-05,1996-06,1996-07,1996-08,1996-09,1996-10,1996-11,1996-12,1997-01,1997-02,1997-03,1997-04,1997-05,1997-06,1997-07,1997-08,1997-09,1997-10,1997-11,1997-12,1998-01,1998-02,1998-03,1998-04,1998-05,1998-06,1998-07,1998-08,1998-09,1998-10,1998-11,1998-12,1999-01,1999-02,1999-03,1999-04,1999-05,1999-06,1999-07,1999-08,1999-09,1999-10,1999-11,1999-12,2000-01,2000-02,2000-03,2000-04,2000-05,2000-06,2000-07,2000-08,2000-09,2000-10,2000-11,2000-12,2001-01,2001-02,2001-03,2001-04,2001-05,2001-06,2001-07,2001-08,2001-09,2001-10,2001-11,2001-12,2002-01,2002-02,2002-03,2002-04,2002-05,2002-06,2002-07,2002-08,2002-09,2002-10,2002-11,2002-12,2003-01,2003-02,2003-03,2003-04,2003-05,2003-06,2003-07,2003-08,2003-09,2003-10,2003-11,2003-12,2004-01,2004-02,2004-03,2004-04,2004-05,2004-06,2004-07,2004-08,2004-09,2004-10,2004-11,2004-12,2005-01,2005-02,2005-03,2005-04,2005-05,2005-06,2005-07,2005-08,2005-09,2005-10,2005-11,2005-12,2006-01,2006-02,2006-03,2006-04,2006-05,2006-06,2006-07,2006-08,2006-09,2006-10,2006-11,2006-12,2007-01,2007-02,2007-03,2007-04,2007-05,2007-06,2007-07,2007-08,2007-09,2007-10,2007-11,2007-12,2008-01,2008-02,2008-03,2008-04,2008-05,2008-06,2008-07,2008-08,2008-09,2008-10,2008-11,2008-12,2009-01,2009-02,2009-03,2009-04,2009-05,2009-06,2009-07,2009-08,2009-09,2009-10,2009-11,2009-12,2010-01,2010-02,2010-03,2010-04,2010-05,2010-06,2010-07,2010-08,2010-09,2010-10,2010-11,2010-12,2011-01,2011-02,2011-03,2011-04,2011-05,2011-06,2011-07,2011-08,2011-09,2011-10,2011-11,2011-12,2012-01,2012-02,2012-03,2012-04,2012-05,2012-06,2012-07,2012-08,2012-09,2012-10,2012-11,2012-12,2013-01,2013-02,2013-03,2013-04,2013-05,2013-06,2013-07,2013-08,2013-09,2013-10,2013-11,2013-12,2014-01,2014-02,2014-03,2014-04,2014-05,2014-06,2014-07,2014-08,2014-09,2014-10,2014-11,2014-12,2015-01,2015-02,2015-03,2015-04,2015-05,2015-06,2015-07,2015-08,2015-09,2015-10,2015-11,2015-12,2016-01,2016-02,2016-03,2016-04,2016-05,2016-06,2016-07,2016-08\nNY,New I changed the column index to date by dropping the non dates from the df quarter = df.drop(['RegionID','Metro','CountyName','SizeRank'],axis=1)
then change the columns to date quarter.columns = pd.to_datetime(quarter.columns) then i would like to do something likequarter = quarter.groupby(pd.TimeGrouper(freq='3M'),axis=1) but it's not working, then i would merge it back to the non-date columns. Also with this approach i wouldnt know how to put the right label for it like [2015Q4,2016Q1,2016Q2,2016Q3,2016Q4]
Here is a vectorized solution which uses pd.PeriodIndex and groupby(..., axis=1):
Data:
In [69]: x
Out[69]:
2016-01 2016-02 2016-03 2016-04 2016-05 2016-06
0 1 0 1 0 0 0
1 2 0 1 0 0 0
2 1 1 2 0 1 0
Solution:
In [70]: x.groupby(pd.PeriodIndex(x.columns, freq='Q'), axis=1).mean()
Out[70]:
2016Q1 2016Q2
0 0.666667 0.000000
1 1.000000 0.000000
2 1.333333 0.333333
Explanation:
In [71]: pd.PeriodIndex(x.columns, freq='Q')
Out[71]: PeriodIndex(['2016Q1', '2016Q1', '2016Q1', '2016Q2', '2016Q2', '2016Q2'], dtype='period[Q-DEC]', freq='Q-DEC')
It's not pretty, but this is the first thing I thought of. It sounds like the date columns can be manipulated separately. Break those out into a separate dataframe of the form below. If the other fields are kept, the conversion to datetime will throw an error.
import numpy as np
import pandas as pd
csv_df = pd.DataFrame({'2016-01':[1,2,1], '2016-02':[0,0,1], '2016-03':[1,1,2], '2016-04':[0,0,0], '2016-05':[0,0,1], '2016-06':[0,0,0]})
# convert columns into datetime format
csv_df.rename(columns=lambda x: pd.to_datetime(x, format='%Y-%m'), inplace=True)
# now strip out the year and the quarter
csv_df.rename(columns=lambda x: str(x.year) + 'Q' + str(x.quarter), inplace=True)
# #lucarlig improved my suggestion by using groupby as follows
csv_df = csv_df.groupby(csv_df.columns, axis=1).mean()
Consider melting the dataframe from the wide format to long format, parse out the quarter and year using datetime and run a pivot_table() to transform back from long to wide aggregating the values with mean:
import pandas as pd
import datetime as dt
import numpy as np
...
# MELT DATAFRAME
meltdf = pd.melt(df, id_vars = ['State','RegionName','RegionID',
'Metro','CountyName','SizeRank'],
var_name = 'Date', value_name = 'Data')
# EXTRACT QUARTER
meltdf['Date'] = pd.to_datetime(meltdf['Date'] + '-01')
meltdf['YearQuarter'] = meltdf['Date'].dt.year.astype(str) + 'Q' + \
meltdf['Date'].dt.quarter.astype(str)
# PIVOT DATAFRAME
pivotdf = pd.pivot_table(meltdf, index=['State','RegionName','RegionID',
'Metro','CountyName','SizeRank'],
columns=['YearQuarter'], values='Data', aggfunc=np.mean)
Output
print(pivotdf.head())
# State RegionName RegionID Metro CountyName SizeRank 1996Q2 1996Q3 1996Q4 1997Q1 1997Q2 1997Q3 ...
