I am creating a game using Python and tkinter, and when I tried to add some music, the function making the music stopped the rest of the script (and also the window).
So I need to create a new thread I think to play the audio and keep the window working...
I tried some things making errors, not running, or stopping the window, I currently have :
window.after(2000,showText,"Text 1")
window.after(2000,playSound,"Sound 1.wav")
window.after(7000,showText,"Text 2")
Important detail : the playSound function returns nothing, so nothing needs to wait for it.
I also don't know much about programming in Python, I prefer using LUAU.

So I'm very new to Python so I'm not sure of the correct way to do what I need.
Basically I am creating a laser tag game. The whole game is controlled by some python code that runs on a PC, the hardware is basically just inputs and outputs for this code.
I want to have game files that are simple files with just the code for the game itself, that way it is fairly easy for anyone to make their own game modes.
Then there needs to be a main program with a GUI (Probably Tkinter) and code to handle sending/receiving information from the hardware (Laser tag guns). I need some way to select a game file from the GUI and run it, but I still need the main server code to be running (to take care of sending and receiving information from the guns, displaying live scores on the GUI, etc).
What would be the best (preferably fairly simple) way to go about doing something like this? Thanks!
Cool project! Generally you let TkInter run in the main thread, and have the other tasks executed in other threads or processes. Brace for some hacking, parallelism is unfortunately pretty difficult to do right.
I am building an user interface using Python, Gtk3 and Glade. I want to change several things on the UI at the same time (i.e start an animation and display a new text) which leads to the application freezing.
I have read that Gtk wasn't thread safe so I didn't used the Thread module.
Instead, I used Glib.idle_add and Gdk.threads_add_idle functions. I am tryig to update a treeview, display some text and show an animated logo at the same time. The application works but it freezes a few seconds and then everything appears at the same time. I try to set different priorities to the threads but it does'nt seem to fix it.
Gtk.threads_add_idle(Glib.PRIORITY_DEFAULT, label.set_text, "text_to_set")
Gtk.threads_add_igle(GLib.PRIORITY_DEFAULT, function_to_display_logo)
I expect the different texts and the treeview and the logo to be displayed without any freeze. Does anyone know how I can fix that ?
Please have a look here at a script example in https://github.com/f4iteightiz/UWR_scoreboard : a GTK window is updated all 0,2s for example (countdowns of several timers appearing in labels; I think anything else could be updated) and it stay reactiv the whole time. No freezing noticeable.
I found out what my error was. I was using the GLib.idle_add function too many times even in some cases where I had no use for it.
For example in the main code I had :
Glib.idle_add(my_function,buffer)
but my_function looked like this :
def myfuntion(buffer):
GLib.idle_add(buffer.set_text,"text")
I deleted the GLib.idle_add call in the main code and now it works perfectly.
I am very much concerned about my productivity all the time. I have recently come across this beautiful chrome extension Limitless
But this is only measuring what i'm doing within the chrome application. As I work most of the time with pdfs, videos etc, I want to develop similar application for linux(ubuntu) desktop enviroment.
Basically I want the script to run continuously as long as the workstation is on.
It should be able to know what I'm currently looking at (for eg a pdf file or a lecture video in vlc) and get the name of the respective file, start time, end times etc and finally post to db.
It is better if it could know if the system is idle or at sleep.
I don't have slightest clue at bash scripting. so my questions is could this task be accomplished with python.
What I've tried?
I started with a search in google "get current application python", "current window title python" etc etc and really surprised to see absurd results.

I think you are asking for vocabulary. So I give you what I know.
You are using Ubuntu so your Window Manager may be Gnome.
The window manager knows which window has the focus.
So maybe you want to find out which window has the focus and you want to map it to the Process that opened the window.
What you need to focus on is is module for Python or a Python Binding for the window manager. This module is likely to also be able to control the windows.
The window manager is started with startx.
You could try to call a command line tool and catch the results

[edit] Repeating the call in Intervals and counting the intervals a process were running gives you a good estimation of running time of a process...

I am thinking of writing a python program that runs in the background and can inspect user's GUI events.
My requirements is very simple:
1) When user right click the mouse, it can show an option; and when this option is chosen, my program should know this event.
2) When user select a file and click some predefined key combination, my program should know this event.
What should I do? Is this a GUI program? I am also thinking that, this program maybe a daemon on the machine and can inspect the user's GUI event, but I am not sure how can I do this.

If you're talking about doing this stuff inside of a wxPython program, then it's all pretty simple. There's a PopupMenu widget for the first one and an AcceratorTable for the second one. If you're wanting to catch mouse and keyboard events outside of a wxPython program, then you have to go very low-level and hook into the OS itself, which means that there really isn't any good way to do it cross-platform. You'll probably want to look at ctypes and similar libraries for that sort of thing.
I've been researching this problem a bit and while I don't have a definite answer, I thought it would be good to share what I found.
First, according to the answers for this question, wxPython cannot track nor control the mouse position outside of the area controlled by the wxPython app. However, as we can see in the answers to this question, under certain circumstances it may be possible to create system-wide hot keys that wxPython can see (although we can also see that this is probably not the optimal solution).
So what will work for the OP? Well, build a cross platform application that does what the OP wants seems almost impossible so I will assume the OP is developing for MS Windows. Following the suggestions in those previous two questions, I looked into the PyWin32 API. It's a little hard to find documentation for it but this question offers some helpful links. A little more digging and I found this tutorial for system-wide hotkeys as well as the win32event.WaitForMultipleObjects and win32event.WaitForSingleObject methods which, if the OP can figure out the proper event, may be what the OP needs to catch menu clicks.
I know it's far from a complete answer but hopefully this can serve as a good jumping-off point for further research.
I'd like to know how to have a program wait for another program to finish a task. I'm not sure what I'd look for for that...
Also, I'm using a mac.

Basically this program "MPEGstreamclip" converts videos, and it opens what appears to be 2 new windows while it's converting. One window is a conversion progress bar, and the other window is a preview of the conversion. (Not sure if these actually count as windows)
(Also, MPEGstreamclip does not have an applescript dictionary, so as far as I know, it can't listen for certain window names existence)
But basically I want my program to listen for when MPEGstreamclip is done, and then run its tasks.
If it helps, when the conversion is done, the mpegstreamclip icon in the dock bounces once. I'm not sure what that means but I'd think you could use that to trigger something couldn't you?

I realized GUI applescript was the answer in this scenario. With it I could tell the PROCESS to get every window, and that worked. However, I'm leaving this up because I'd like to know other ways. I'm sure this GUI workaround won't work for everything.
If the MPEGstreamclip actually ends when it is done, you could wrap the whole thing up in a python script using various techniques already discussed in another post. Just be sure to wait for the external process to end before continuing with your other steps.
