I'm trying to reindex the columns in a set of dataframes inside a loop. This only seems to work outside the loop. See sample code below
import pandas as pd
data1 = [[1,2,3],[4,5,6],[7,8,9]]
data2 = [[10,11,12],[13,14,15],[16,17,18]]
data3 = [[19,20,21],[22,23,24],[25,26,27]]
index = ['a','b','c']
columns = ['d','e','f']
df1 = pd.DataFrame(data=data1,index=index,columns=columns)
df2 = pd.DataFrame(data=data2,index=index,columns=columns)
df3 = pd.DataFrame(data=data3,index=index,columns=columns)
columns2 = ['f','e','d']
for i in [df1,df2,df3]:
i = i.reindex(columns=columns2)
print(df1)
df2 = df2.reindex(columns=columns2)
print(df2)
df1 is not reindexed as desired, however if I reindex df2 outside of the loop it works. Why is that?

That happens for the same reason this happens:
a = 5
b = 6
for i in [a, b]:
i = 4
>>> a
5
Why? See this accepted answer.
Concerning your problem, one way to go about it is create a list of reindexed dataframes like so:
reindexed_dfs = [df.reindex(columns=columns2) for df in [df1, df2, df3]]
and then reassign df1, df2 and df3. But it's better to just keep using your newly created list anyways.

I am new to loop in Python and just came across a weird question. I was doing some calculations on multiple dataframes, and to simplify the question, here is an illustration.
Suppose I have 3 dataframes filled with NaN:
# generate NaN entries
data = np.empty((15, 10))
# create dataframe
data[:] = np.nan
dfnan = pd.DataFrame(data)
df1 = dfnan
df2 = dfnan
df3 = dfnan
After this step, all the three dataframes give me NaN as expected.
But then, if I add two for loops in one block like below:
for i in range(0, 15, 1):
df1.iloc[i] = 0
for j in range(0, 15, 1):
df2.iloc[j] = df1.iloc[j].transform(lambda x: x+1)
Then all of df1, df2, and df3 give me 1 entries. But shouldn't it be that:
df1 filled with 0, df2 filled with 1 and df3 filled with NaN (since I didn't make any change to it)?
Why is that and how I can change it to get the wanted result?
Assignment never copies in python. df1, df2, df3 and dfnan are all references to the same object (pd.DataFrame(data)). This means that changes in one are reflected in the remaining ones, as they all point to the same object.

To create independent copies use the copy method
dfnan = pd.DataFrame(data)
df1 = dfnan.copy()
df2 = dfnan.copy()
df3 = dfnan.copy()

I use pandas replace function to replace a value. Please see the code below:
import pandas as pd
d = {'color' : pd.Series(['white', 'blue', 'orange']),
'second_color': pd.Series(['white', 'black', 'blue']),
'value' : pd.Series([1., 2., 3.])}
df1 = pd.DataFrame(d)
print(df1)
df = df1
df['color'] = df['color'].replace('white','red')
print(df1)
print(df)
I intend to change a value in df, but why is the same value in df1 also changed?
The code below is ok.
df=df.replace('white','red')
You need to use .copy()
df = df1.copy()
So the changes you do to df will not propagate to df1
Because both are referencing the same data location.
When you do df = df1 it does not create a new data frame it just set the reference of df to variable df1. Using id() you can see both referencing to the same address.
>>> df = df1
>>> id(df)
41633008
>>> id(df1)
41633008
To make a new copy you can use DataFrame.copy method
>>> df = df1.copy()
>>> id(df)
31533376
>>> id(df1)
41633008
Now you can see both referenced to different locations.

Using condition of a dataframe in pandas.where of another dataframe [duplicate]

I have two dataframes: df1 has data and df2 is kind of like a map for the data. (They are both the same size and are 2D).
I would like to use pandas.where (or any method that isn't too convoluted) to replace the values of df1 based of the condition of the same cell in df2.
For instance, if df2 is equal to 0, I want to set the same cell in df1 also to 0. How do I do this?
When I try the following I get an error:
df3 = df1.where(df2 == 0, other = 0)
import pandas as pd
df = pd.DataFrame()
df_1 = pd.DataFrame()
df['a'] = [1,2,3,4,5]
df_1['b'] = [5,6,7,8,0]
This will give a sample df:
Now implement a loop, using range or len(df.index)
for i in range(0,5):
df['a'][i] = np.where( df_1['b'][i] == 0, 0, df['a'][i])
Generally you shouldn't need to handle multiple dataframes separately like this; if df1, df2 have the same shape and either the same index or some common column they can be joined/merged on (e.g. say it's named 'id'), then merge them:
df = pd.merge(df1, df2, on='id')

This is a portion of my code:
df3 = pd.DataFrame(columns=["colA","colB"])
def someFunction(filePath,file,df):
df2 = pd.DataFrame(columns=["colA","colB"])
df1 = pd.read_csv(filePath,header=0)
var = ["foo1","bar1"]
df2['colA'] = ["foo2","bar2"]

df = df.append(df2)
df1 = pd.DataFrame()
df2 = pd.DataFrame()
return df
for root, dirs, fileList in os.walk(someDir):
for file in fileList:

On running the code, I don't see df2 getting appended to df3. Instead, the value of df3 within the function is the same as df3 and empty dataframe outside the function.
How do I consistently append df2 to df3 and get df3 to grow for every file processed?

Iterating over different data frames using an iterator

Suppose I have n number of data frames df_1, df_2, df_3, ... df_n, containing respectively columns named SPEED1 ,SPEED2, SPEED3, ..., SPEEDn, for instance:
import numpy as np
df_1 = pd.DataFrame({'SPEED1':np.random.uniform(0,600,100)})
df_2 = pd.DataFrame({'SPEED2':np.random.uniform(0,600,100)})
and I want to make the same changes to all of the data frames. How do I do so by defining a function on similar lines?
def modify(df,nr):
df_invalid_nr=df_nr[df_nr['SPEED'+str(nr)]>500]
df_valid_nr=~df_invalid_nr
Invalid_cycles_nr=df[df_invalid]
df=df[df_valid]
print(Invalid_cycles_nr)
print(df)
So, when I try to run the above function
modify(df_1,1)
It returns the entire data frame without modification and the invalid cycles as an empty array. I am guessing I need to define the modification on the global dataframe somewhere in the function for this to work.
I am also not sure if I could do this another way, say just looping an iterator through all the data frames. But, I am not sure it will work.

df_valid_i=~df_invalid_i

To my mind a better approach would be to store your dfs into a list and enumerate over it for augmenting informations into your dfs to create a valid column:
for idx, df in enumerate([df_1, df_2]):
col = 'SPEED'+str(idx+1)
df['valid'] = df[col] <= 500
print(df_1)
SPEED valid
0 516.395756 False
1 14.643694 True
2 478.085372 True
3 592.831029 False
4 1.431332 True
You can then filter for valid or invalid with df_1[df_1.valid] or df_1[df_1.valid == False]

If it is possible for you re-think your code. Each DataFrame has one column speed, then name it SPEED:
dfs = dict(df_1=pd.DataFrame({'SPEED':np.random.uniform(0,600,100)}),
df_2=pd.DataFrame({'SPEED':np.random.uniform(0,600,100)}))
It will allow you to do the following one liner:
dfs = dict(map(lambda key_val: (key_val[0],
key_val[1].assign(valid = key_val[1]['SPEED'] <= 500)),
dfs.items()))
print(dfs['df_1'])
SPEED valid
0 516.395756 False
1 14.643694 True
2 478.085372 True
3 592.831029 False
4 1.431332 True
Explanations:
dfs.items() returns a list of key (i.e. names) and values (i.e. DataFrames)
map(foo, bar) apply the function foo (see this answer, and DataFrame assign) to all the elements of bar (i.e. to all the key/value pairs of dfs.items().
dict() cast the map to a dict.
Notes
About modify
Notice that your function modify is not returning anything... I suggest you to have more readings on mutability and immutability in Python. This article is interesting.
You can then test the following for instance:
def modify(df):
df=df[df.SPEED1<0.5]
#The change in df is on the scope of the function only,
#it will not modify your input, return the df...
return df
#... and affect the output to apply changes
df_1 = modify(df_1)
About access df_1 using an iterator
Notice that when you do:
for i in range(1,n+1):
df_i something
df_i in your loop will call the object df_i for each iteration (and not df_1 etc.)
To call an object by its name, use globals()['df_'+str(i)] instead (Assuming that df_1 to df_n+1 are located in globals()) - from this answer.
To my mind it is not a clean approach. I don't know how do you create your DataFrames but if it is possible for your I will suggest you to store them into a dictionary instead affecting manually:
dfs = {}
dfs['df_1'] = ...
or a bit more automatically if df_1 to df_n already exist - according to first part of vestland answer :
dfs = dict((var, eval(var)) for
var in dir() if
isinstance(eval(var), pd.core.frame.DataFrame) and 'df_' in var)
Then it would be easier for your to iterate over your DataFrames:
for i in range(1,n+1):
dfs['df_'+str(i)'] something
You can use the globals() function which allows you to get a variable by his name.
I just add df_i = globals()["df_"+str(i)] at the begining of the for loop :

... and then organize them in a dict using:

for dfName in dfNames:
myFrames[dfName] = eval(dfName)
From that list of interesting dataframes, you can subset those that you'd like to do something with. Here's how you focus only on df_1 and df_2:
invalid = ['df_3']
for inv in invalid:
myFrames.pop(inv, None)
Now you can reference ALL your valid dfs by looping through them:
for key in myFrames.keys():
print(myFrames[key])
