I have a issue with tkinter. I want to use Entry to take info from the user and then
compare it to a string if the result is true I want it to print a Label on the screen
and if false I want it to print something else. For some reason the .get does not
show for me, and I can't find a way to compare the user input in. The Entery to a simple
string that I saved as a variable.
from tkinter import *
window = Tk()
window.geometry("800x600")
window.title("Sara's chocolate balls")
def Button_Click():
test1 = "hey"
if entry1 == test1:
test2.pack()
else:test3.pack()
entry1 = Entry(window, width=30).pack()
Button1 = Button(window, text="Button", command=Button_Click).pack()
test2 = Label(window, text="Good")
test3 = Label(window, text="Bad")
window.mainloop()
So I found a solution:
entry1 = Entry(window,textvariable=var, width=30).pack()
var = StringVar()
user_input = var.get()
It works like that.

How to disable the button in tkinter window when two passwords does not match?
My work:
from tkinter import *
from functools import partial
root = Tk()
root.geometry('280x100')
root.title('Tkinter Password')
def validation_pw(ep,cp):
if ep.get() == cp.get():
Label(root, text = "Confirmed").grid(column=0, row=5)
else:
Label(root, text = "Not matched").grid(column=0, row=5)
# check_button['state'] = DISABLED <============================
ep = StringVar()
cp = StringVar()
Label1 = Label(root, text = "Enter Password").grid(column=0, row=0)
pwEnty = Entry(root, textvariable = ep, show = '*').grid(column=1, row=0)
# Confirmed password label
Label2 = Label(root, text = "Confirm Password").grid(column=0, row=1)
pwconfEnty = Entry(root, textvariable = cp, show = '*').grid(column=1, row=1)
validation_pw = partial(validation_pw, ep,cp)
check_button = Button(root, text = "check", command = validation_pw).grid(column=0, row=4)
root.mainloop()
It shows if two passwords are not matched.
Now, I want to disable the check button if two passwords are not matched. I want the user cannot try the passwords anymore if failure.
So in the function validation_pw, I add check_button['state'] = DISABLED.
However, an error pops out
TypeError: 'NoneType' object does not support item assignment
How to fix this issue? Thanks!
Your checkbutton is actually None, because it's the result of the grid function.
To fix it, first declare the button, next grid it.
Before:
check_button = Button([...]).grid(column=0, row=4) # Result of Button.grid function
print(check_button) # None
After:
check_button = Button([...])
check_button.grid(column=0, row=4)
print(check_button) # Button object ...
You get the error of NoneType because at one point it was assigned nothing. This is because you used .grid on the same line as the button.
Fixed code:
check_button = Button(root, text = "check", command = validation_pw)
check_button.grid(column=0, row=4)
I'm trying to make an example for some high school students using tkinter with multiple forms, and accessing form data in different functions. I'm trying to keep the example simple, but having a small problem. The sv3 & sv4 variables are not getting the values from the second form. Any suggestions or ideas?
from tkinter import *
root = Tk()
sv1 = StringVar()
sv2 = StringVar()
sv3 = StringVar()
sv4 = StringVar()
#first function - this DOES NOT take text from entry widgets and displays, but should
def callback2():
test2 = sv3.get()
print(test2)
print (sv4.get())
print("show second form entry widgets values")
return True
#first function - this takes text from entry widgets and displays
def callback():
test = sv1.get()
print(test)
print (sv2.get())
print("show first form entry widgets values")
new_form()
return True
#new form
def new_form():
newfrm = Tk()
entry3 = Entry(newfrm, textvariable=sv3).pack()
entry4 = Entry(newfrm, textvariable=sv4).pack()
button = Button(newfrm, text="Click Me", command=callback2).pack()
newfrm.mainloop()
#initial form
def main_form():
entry1 = Entry(root, textvariable=sv1).pack()
entry2 = Entry(root, textvariable=sv2).pack()
button = Button(root, text="Click Me", command=callback).pack()
root.mainloop()
main_form()
Here how to avoid using multiple Tk instances and manually transfers the values from the first two Entrys to the second pair. See lines with #### comments.
from tkinter import *
root = Tk()
sv1 = StringVar()
sv2 = StringVar()
sv3 = StringVar()
sv4 = StringVar()
#first function - this now take text from entry widgets and displays as it should.
def callback2():
test2 = sv3.get()
print(test2)
print (sv4.get())
print("show second form entry widgets values")
return True
#first function - this takes text from entry widgets and displays
def callback():
test = sv1.get()
print(test)
print (sv2.get())
print("show first form entry widgets values")
new_form()
return True
#new form
def new_form():
#### newfrm = Tk()
newfrm = Toplevel() #### Instead.
sv3.set(sv1.get()) #### Trasfer value.
sv4.set(sv2.get()) #### Trasfer value.
entry3 = Entry(newfrm, textvariable=sv3).pack()
entry4 = Entry(newfrm, textvariable=sv4).pack()
button = Button(newfrm, text="Click Me", command=callback2).pack()
newfrm.mainloop()
#initial form
def main_form():
entry1 = Entry(root, textvariable=sv1).pack()
entry2 = Entry(root, textvariable=sv2).pack()
button = Button(root, text="Click Me", command=callback).pack()
root.mainloop()
main_form()
I'm trying to create a function in tkinter where I can print out what the user writes in a Entry box. I'm able to print out ask_an_entry_get, but when I try to print what_is_answer_entry_get
, I get nothing my empty spaces.
Please find out the problem here. Also I'm using the Entry widget, along with the get() function, to get input from the user.
def answer_quizmaker_score():
print(ask_an_entry_get)
print(what_is_answer_entry_get)
I made a lot of global variables so I could use them all around my code.
global what_is_answer_entry
what_is_answer_entry = Entry(root4)
what_is_answer_entry.pack()
I then used the get() function to retrieve what the user typed.
global what_is_answer_entry_get
what_is_answer_entry_get = what_is_answer_entry.get()
This is the exact process I did for both ask_an_entry_get and what_is_answer_entry_get. However for some reason only ask_an_entry_get is printed, while what_is_answer_entry_get is printing nothing in the console.
from tkinter import *
root = Tk()
root.geometry("500x500")
txt1 = StringVar()
txt2 = StringVar()
def txt_printer():
print(txt1.get())
print(txt2.get())
x = Entry(root, textvariable=txt1, width=20)
x.place(x=0, y=0)
y = Entry(root, textvariable=txt2, width=20)
y.place(x=0, y=50)
btn_print = Button(root, text="print", command=txt_printer)
btn_print.place(x=0, y=100)
# Or if you want to show the txt on window then:
def txt_on_window():
lb1 = Label(root, text=txt1.get())
lb1.place(x=0, y=200)
lb2 = Label(root, text=txt2.get())
lb2.place(x=0, y=235)
btn_print_on_window = Button(root, text="print on screen", command=txt_on_window)
btn_print_on_window.place(x=0, y=150)
root.mainloop()
I am new to programming and Tkinter. I want to DISABLED textbox when checkbox is pressed and open it NORMAL when box is not ticked. Here is my code:
from tkinter import *
root = Tk()
def lock_fields():
if check == True:
data.configure(state=DISABLED)
if check == False:
data.configure(state=NORMAL)
check = BooleanVar()
open_for_edit = Checkbutton(root, text="check the box for editing", variable=check,
onvalue=True, offvalue=False, command=lambda: lock_fields())
open_for_edit.pack()
check = check.get()
data = Text(root)
data.insert(END, "I would like to be able to edit this text only when checkbox is checked.")
data.pack()
root.mainloop()
It seems that for some reason the check-variable is always False when it enters to lock_fields function. I tried passing check argument to the method.
You're pretty close, only thing is that the check.get() line must be in the function. Also you don't need the lambda. Try this:
from tkinter import *
root = Tk()
def lock_fields():
if check.get():
data.configure(state=DISABLED)
else:
data.configure(state=NORMAL)
check = BooleanVar()
open_for_edit = Checkbutton(root, text="check the box for editing", variable=check, onvalue=True, offvalue=False, command=lock_fields)
open_for_edit.pack()
data = Text(root)
data.insert(END, "I would like to be able to edit this text only when checkbox is checked.")
data.pack()
root.mainloop()
So I'm attempting to make a program with tkinter, and so far, things have gone somewhat as hoped, and I nearly achieved what I wanted.
But I've got a problem with destroying labels.
from tkinter import *
root = Tk()
root.geometry("500x500")
def controleerAntwoord(gekozenHeld, submit, eersteHintButton):
antwoord = entry.get()
if antwoord == gekozenHeld:
submit.destroy()
eersteHintButton.destroy()
eersteHint("destroy", button)
startspel()
def eersteHint(superheldHint, button):
hintTextLabel = Label(root, text = "First hint: ")
hintLabel = Label(root, text = superheldHint)
if superheldHint != "destroy":
hintTextLabel.pack()
hintLabel.pack()
button.destroy()
if superheldHint == "destroy":
hintTextLabel.destroy()
hintLabel.destroy()
def startspel():
entry.delete(0, 'end')
gekozenHeld = "test"
superheldHint1 = 'hey'
eersteHintButton = Button(root, text = "Give First Hint", command = lambda: eersteHint(superheldHint1, eersteHintButton))
submit = Button(root, text = "Submit Answer",foreground = "blue", command = lambda: controleerAntwoord(gekozenHeld, submit, eersteHintButton))
eersteHintButton.pack(side = BOTTOM)
entry.pack(side = BOTTOM)
submit.pack(side = BOTTOM, pady = 20)
def start_up():
name = entry.get().strip()
if name != "":
button.destroy()
giveName.destroy()
startspel()
giveName = Label(root, text="Insert your name: ")
entry = Entry(root)
button = Button(root, text="Enter", command=start_up)
entry.pack()
button.pack()
root.mainloop()
This is my current code so far, I know it looks big, but a lot of it can be ignored for this question.
As to how the program works, you enter your name and get taken to the next window.
There you can press the submit button and enter some text, as well as asking for a hint.
When you press the hint button, you get some text on the screen, and when you submit the correct answer, which in this case, is "test", the text should disappear. But it does not.
Any ideas on what I'm doing wrong?
The problem is that you're using a local variable, but expecting that local variable to somehow be remembered the second time you call the function. All your code does is create a label and then immediately destroy the one it just created. If you want it to destroy the one created earlier, you'll have to store that in a global variable.
