im pretty new to coding and stuff but for whatever reason, python, pip or even doing cd C:\Python38\scripts cmd will just tell me the directory isnt found or that it isnt a command, i did echo %PATH% and it is in there. (this is probably a really simple solution, im not advanced with stuff like this at all)
Open a new CMD with the start menu
go to the location where python is installed.
press on the Path next to Search Bar.
Copy, back to CMD, cd (paste)
This will set the working directory to where python is installed.
You can test now with python command, and check it it works , then the issue is only path related.
Now for checking with Path, You will need to add the complete path to the python.exe the one you just copied into CMD.
For example
C:\Users\George\AppData\Local\Programs\Python\Python39 at this path there will be a python.exe where You can execute with CMD.
If you have an issue with the path and have to update to the new one, Make sure to start a new CMD window to take the effects of the Path update.
You would need to add python in the PATH variable to access python from cmd in windows.

Post that you would be able to access pip from cmd/ use pip within cmd

On git bash, I receive a command not found message for python, r and nano.
I am on Windows 10. I do not know what I am doing wrong.
I type
r --version
python --version
nano --version
and they all return command not found.
I read something that had me try
alias python='winpty python.exe'
and it renamed python, but when I tried
touch .bashrc
it returned
touch: command not found
I followed the instructions in a Github course, PS239T. I have been fortunate, except for getting these three programs to work.
I tried
build/console.exe c:/Python36/python.exe
and it returned
build/console.exe: No such file or directory
I tried
PATH=$PATH:/c/Python36/
$ export PATH="$PATH:/c/Python36"
echo 'export PATH="$PATH:/c/Python36"' > .profile
and nothing.
I got Python 64-bit via Anaconda.
I tried setting up the Python 3.4 environment

nothing.

Download and install 'Anaconda'

Download the default Python 3 installer 'do not follow the link to version 2'.
Use all of the defaults for installation except make sure to check 'Make Anaconda the default Python.'
Install R by downloading and running
'this .exe file from CRAN'

Also, please install the 'RStudio IDE'
'http://www.rstudio.com/ide/download/desktop'.
All you need is RStudio Desktop.
nano is a basic editor and the default that we use in this class. To install
it, download the Software Carpentry Windows installer

and double click on the file to run it. 'This installer requires an active internet connection.'
Sublime Text is a more advanced editor. Download Sublime Text 3 'here'

I began trying janos advice and ran
/c/Python36/python.exe --version
and it returned
bash: '/c/python36/python.exe: No such file or directory.
I tried to run
PATH="/c/Python36:$PATH" python.exe --version
but it returned
bash: python.exe.: command not found
I tried to run
PATH="/c/Python36:$PATH" python --version
and it returned
bash: python: command not found

janos told me I went too far without figuring out the problem, then told me to run
ls -l /c/Python36/python.exe
and it returned
ls: cannot access '/c/Python36/python.exe': no such file or directory.
janos told me to focus on the first error
bash: '/c/python36/python.exe: No such file or directory.
after entering
/c/Python36/python.exe --version
and so there I will focus.

Can you open a file explorer and navigate to C:\Python36, and see python.exe there? Probably not.
and is correct.
I ran

with no success.
I ran that in explorer and found that the publisher could not be verified.

I went to
'python.org/downloads/release/python-363'
and downloaded 'Windows x86 embeddable zip file' and Unzipped it in
C/Users/Edward/Anaconda3/pkgs
it worked.

I bet I am having the same problems with 'r' and 'nano'.
I am going to run down the list again and perform all the check. I will do the same thing with 'r' and 'nano'.
Everything worked out for Python. I will do 'nano' and 'r' in due course.

janos is right again. I would need to create the python36 folder as it was not built automatically during the installation. janos' method worked on 'r' and 'subl' or sublime text 3. I gave up on 'nano'.
I found that some of my '.exe' files were in listing with spaces in the names. I moved to the user folder and eliminated any spaces.
I also downloaded version from the official website, and that too helped.
I could not figure out how to get 'nano' to work. I could not even find it on my pc. I used 'subl' instead.
Start from the basics. Try the simplest thing that can possibly work,
and make progress in baby steps,
from one sane state to the next.
The first step is to run a by entering its absolute path directly.
If the Python executable is at /c/Python36/python.exe, then run this:
/c/Python36/python.exe --version
This is very simple and it should just work.
If it doesn't, the command will give you an error message with clues.
A next step could be to simulate adding to PATH. Try this:
PATH="/c/Python36:$PATH" python.exe --version
This is one line. It sets a value to PATH in a way such that it's only active during the execution of the command. After the command completes, the value of PATH will be back to what it was before. This is a good way to test things. Also notice that I prepended to PATH the directory that contains python.exe, not the full path to python.exe.
That's an important point, this is how the PATH variable works.
It's a list of directories, and all executable files in those directories become easily executable by simply typing their name, without having to type their absolute paths.
Next, I would try this:
PATH="/c/Python36:$PATH" python --version
That is, see if you can drop the .exe from the name of the command.
I don't have Windows so I cannot test if this works.
And maybe it doesn't. (But I think it does.)
If everything worked so far, then the next step is to make the PATH setting permanent.
The way to do that is to put the command PATH="/c/Python36:$PATH" into a file that is always executed when you start a new Git Bash session.
If I remember correctly on Windows you can put it in ~/.profile
(a file named .profile in your home directory).
Where is ~? Here's one way to find it:
cd
explorer .
The above opens a file manager inside that directory.
You can use a plain-text editor like Notepad or Wordpad to edit it.
You can also use this shell command to append the line that updates PATH:
echo 'PATH="/c/Python36:$PATH"' >> ~/.profile
This line will get executed in all new Git Bash session.
Not in the current session,
because this file is only executed once.
If everything above worked, then in a new Git Bash session you should be able to run python --version.
If not everything worked, then you need to read the error message you get carefully, and not advance to the next step until the problem is resolved.
It's useless to advance to a next step when you are already not in a sane state.
You can follow the exact same logical process for all the other programs too.
I am trying to access Python through a Windows command prompt, but am at an office and cannot add an Environment Variable. So, I cant follow the advice provided here. Thus, I added a User Environment Variable through User Accounts and use Variable:python and Value: C:\Python33. When I do a Windows Run check on %python% I reach the required Python33 folder. However, when I type python -Version in the command prompt I get the error 'python' is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file. I am not sure how to proceed.
Run Python from the command prompt and include the full path to python.exe. For example to get the version:
C:\Python33\python.exe --version
When you run a script you specify the path to the script if you're not in the directory where the script is located. For example, if your script is in C:\scripts and is called my_script.py:
C:\Python33\python.exe C:\scripts\my_script.py
Instead of setting environment variables, you can use the whole path, like Neo wrote e.g.:
C:\Python33\python.exe yourPythonScript.py
Remove any environment variables you have added.
C:\Python33\python.exe pyscript.py should work.
I once Had a similar problem, but i couldnt find any solution, not even adding the path to the python folder was working.
Then I opened Python and clicked in File, then browser path, and I found that I had another folder that contained the real Python folder, not the default one. Maybe it could work for you too.
I dont know how to word this question but here is the essence of what is going on. I am attempting to run ipython in accordance with the instructions below but I will explain it by way of pip because i am more familiar with it.
In command line If i want to install something with pip i must first navigate to the folder it is located in and then run it e.g.
cd "C:\Python27\ArcGIS10.2\Scripts
pip install "ipython[notebook]"
This works fine, if I am in any other location it will not work. this is fine but I am now trying to run something like the below in a separate folder and I cannot do it. i dont want to clutter that scripts folder with all of that jazz so i would really like to run ipython outside of the root folder.

You mention, your path is set, but perhaps it was only applied it temporarily? Make sure you use setx to make a permanent change:
setx path "%path%;C:\Python27\ArcGIS10.2\Scripts\"
Now exit the terminal and start it again - you should be able to run ipython from any location

Try following command.
set path=%path%;c:\python27
PATH is set only for the cmd.exe in which you run the above command.
To permanently set PATH:
Right click My computer in the desktop.
Click Advanced System Settings on the left.
Click Environmental Variable.
Add or Update PATH variable:
If it does not exist, create one, and set value as C:\python27
If it exist, append ;C:\Python27 to existing value.
Restart cmd.exe. (PATH will not change for already launched cmd.exe)
UPDATE
If you want to use python2, copy the executable.
CD C:\python27
COPY python.exe python2.exe
Had the same problem and fixed it...
I have C:\Python27, which i have added to my environment variables which gave me access to "python" though the CMD.. but for installing node-sass though npm, which was my problem, it continues to say that "python2" is not found. A friend the told me i could just rename name executable, which i didn't belive, but it worked :-)
The rename was from:
C:\Python27\python.exe > C:\Python27\python2.exe
It works for me, even though it find it weird just renaming a file.. but then, i am not hardcore in the windows CMD.
I don't know whether it can be switched or not while keeping both python2 and python3.
But while working with python2 you can remove the "python3 path" from the PATH.
Cause By default in windows python3 is selected if both are installed.
So you can try this to use python2. then when necessary again add the "python3 path " to the PATH
although I add Python to path variable, it appeared further, I tried with Thor A. Pedersen's answer it worked, I found another way without rename python.exe to python2.exe, just update your node config as bellow. It worked for me.

I just downloaded and installed Python 2.7.2 to my laptop and I am trying to run some sample programs. My laptop is running Windows XP.
When I open a cmd window and type python I get:
'python' is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file.
I am not a Windows person (mostly mainframes). However I am guessing that there is some command that I need to execute to define python as a command. Can anyone tell me what that command is?
The installer placed Python at C:\Python27\.
You need to add the python executable path to your Window's PATH variable.
From the desktop, right-click My Computer and click Properties.
In the System Properties window, click on the Advanced tab.
In the Advanced section, click the Environment Variables button.
Highlight the Path variable in the Systems Variable section and click the Edit
button.
Add the path of your python executable(c:\Python27\). Each different directory is separated with a
semicolon. (Note: do not put spaces between elements in the PATH. Your addition to the PATH should read ;c:\Python27 NOT ; C\Python27)
Apply the changes. You might need to restart your system, though simply restarting cmd.exe should be sufficient.
Launch cmd and try again. It should work.
This is because the Python exec are not in the search path of your operating system. In windows, start CMD. Type in
setx PATH PythonPath
where PythonPath is usually C:\Python27 or C:\Python33 or C:\Users\<Your User Name>\AppData\Local\Programs\Python\Python37 depending on your Python version. After restarting the CMD, you should get see outcomes when typing
Python --version
Python comes with a small utility that fixes this. From the command line run:
c:\python27\tools\scripts\win_add2path.py
Make sure you close the command window (with exit or the close button) and open it again.
Just another clarification for those starting out. When you add C:\PythonXX to your path, make sure there are NO SPACES between variables e.g.
This:
SomeOtherDirectory;C:\Python27
Not this:
SomeOtherDirectory; C:\Python27
That took me a good 15 minutes of headache to figure out (I'm on windows 7, might be OS dependent). Happy coding.
I had the same problem for a long time.
I just managed to resolve it.
So, you need to select your Path, like the others said above.
What I did:
Open a command window. Write set path=C:\Python24 (put the location and the version for your python). Now type python, It should work.
The annoying part with this is that you have to type it every time you open the CMD.
I tried to do the permanent one (with the changes in the Environmental variables) but for me its not working.
You can do it in python installer:
Go to Control Panel / System / "Advanced" tab / Enviromental Variables
Find variable called PATH in the lower list, and edit it. Add to the end C:\Python27
Open a new cmd window and try now.
emphasis: Remember to always RESTART the CMD WINDOW after setting the PATH environmental variable for it to take effect!
in PowerShell enter this:
[Environment]::SetEnvironmentVariable("Path", "$env:Path;C:\Python27",
"User")
Close PowerShell and then start it again to make sure Python now runs. If it doesn’t,

Further to #Udi post this is what the script tried to do, but did not work with me.
I had to the set the following in the PATH nothing else.
C:\Users\hUTBER\AppData\Local\Programs\Python\Python35
C:\Users\hUTBER\AppData\Local\Programs\Python\Python35\Scripts
Were mine and now python works in the cmd
Easy. Won't need to get confused but paths and variables and what to click. Just follow my steps:
Go to the python installer.
Run it.
Out of the 3 options choose modify.
Check py launcher.
Next.
Check "Add python to environment variables"
Install.
Restart the cmd when finished and boom done
If you are trying to install python version python-3.9.6 then click the checkbox of Add Python 3.9 to PATH
Make sure you click on Add python.exe to path during install, and select:
"Will be installed on local hard drive"
It fixed my problem, hope it helps...
Another helpful but simple solution might be restarting your computer after doing the download if Python is in the PATH variable. This has been a mistake I usually make when downloading Python onto a new machine.
After restarting my machine then Windows will often recognize Python in the PATH variable.
