I'm trying to extract URLs from a sitemap like this: https://www.bestbuy.com/sitemap_c_0.xml.gz
I've unzipped and saved the .xml.gz file as an .xml file. The structure looks like this:

I'm attempting to use ElementTree to extract all of the URLs within the loc nodes throughout this file, but struggling to get it working right.
Per the documentation, I'm trying something like this:
import xml.etree.ElementTree as ET
tree = ET.parse('my_local_filepath')
root = tree.getroot()
value = root.findall(".//loc")
However, nothing gets loaded into value. My goal is to extract all of the URLs between the loc nodes and print it out into a new flat file. Where am I going wrong?
You were close in your attempt but like mzjn said in a comment, you didn't account for the default namespace (xmlns="http://www.sitemaps.org/schemas/sitemap/0.9").
Here's an example of how to account for the namespace:
import xml.etree.ElementTree as ET
tree = ET.parse('my_local_filepath')
ns = {"sm": "http://www.sitemaps.org/schemas/sitemap/0.9"}
for elem in tree.findall(".//sm:loc", ns):

Note that I used the namespace prefix sm, but you could use any NCName.

We can iterate through the URLs, toss them into a list and write them to a file as such:

is there a way to parse an entire ElementTree from a file and return it as a string in python? I would like to read the entire file into a single string value, for example grabbing the entire output of dump(tree)? Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated!

I am generating an XML document in Python using an ElementTree, but the tostring function doesn't include an XML declaration when converting to plaintext.

I am surprised to find that there doesn't seem to be a way with ElementTree.tostring(). You can however use ElementTree.ElementTree.write() to write your XML document to a fake file:

See this question. Even then, I don't think you can get your 'standalone' attribute without writing prepending it yourself.
I would use lxml (see http://lxml.de/api.html).
Then you can:

If you include the encoding='utf8', you will get an XML header:
xml.etree.ElementTree.tostring writes a XML encoding declaration with encoding='utf8'

YES, and there is no need of using .tostring function. According to ElementTree Documentation, you should create an ElementTree object, create Element and SubElements, set the tree's root, and finally use xml_declaration argument in .write function, so the declaration line is included in output file.
You can do it this way:

tree = ET.ElementTree("tree")
document = ET.Element("outer")
node1 = ET.SubElement(document, "inner")
node1.text = "text"
tree._setroot(document)
tree.write("./output.xml", encoding = "UTF-8", xml_declaration = True)

I encounter this issue recently, after some digging of the code, I found the following code snippet is definition of function ElementTree.write

So the answer is, if you need write the XML header to your file, set the encoding argument other than utf-8 or us-ascii, e.g. UTF-8

I didn't found any alternative for adding the standalone argument in the documentation so I adapted the ET.tosting function to take it as an argument.

You opened the file for appending, which adds data to the end. Open the file for writing instead, using the w mode. Better still, just use the .write() method on the ElementTree object:
tree = xml.parse("/tmp/" + executionID +".xml")
xmlRoot = tree.getroot()
child = xml.Element("NewNode")
xmlRoot.append(child)
tree.write("/tmp/" + executionID +".xml")
Using the .write() method has the added advantage that you can set the encoding, force the XML prolog to be written if you need it, etc.
If you must use an open file to prettify the XML, use the 'w' mode, 'a' opens a file for appending, leading to the behaviour you observed:
with open("/tmp/" + executionID +".xml", 'w') as output:
output.write(prettify(tree))
where prettify is something along the lines of:

I encountered the same issue while processing xml file. You can use below code before parse your XML file. This will resolve your issue.
