How to empty or optional match group in Python RegEx= [duplicate] - python

This is an example string:
123456#p654321
Currently, I am using this match to capture 123456 and 654321 in to two different groups:
([0-9].*)#p([0-9].*)
But on occasions, the #p654321 part of the string will not be there, so I will only want to capture the first group. I tried to make the second group "optional" by appending ? to it, which works, but only as long as there is a #p at the end of the remaining string.
What would be the best way to solve this problem?

You have the #p outside of the capturing group, which makes it a required piece of the result. You are also using the dot character (.) improperly. Dot (in most reg-ex variants) will match any character. Change it to:
([0-9]*)(?:#p([0-9]*))?
The (?:) syntax is how you get a non-capturing group. We then capture just the digits that you're interested in. Finally, we make the whole thing optional.
Also, most reg-ex variants have a \d character class for digits. So you could simplify even further:
(\d*)(?:#p(\d*))?
As another person has pointed out, the * operator could potentially match zero digits. To prevent this, use the + operator instead:
(\d+)(?:#p(\d+))?

Your regex will actually match no digits, because you've used * instead of +.
This is what (I think) you want:
(\d+)(?:#p(\d+))?

Regex Statement to only match parts of a string for comparison - Python

What I am trying to do is match values from one file to another, but I only need to match the first portion of the string and the last portion.
I am reading each file into a list, and manipulating these based on different Regex patterns I have created. Everything works, except when it comes to these type of values:
V-1\ZDS\R\EMBO-20-1:24
V-1\ZDS\R\EMBO-20-6:24
In this example, I only want to match 'V-1\ZDS\R\EMBO-20' and then compare the '24' value at the end of the string. The number x in '20-x:', can vary and doesn't matter in terms of comparisons, as long as the first and last parts of this string match.
This is the Regex I am using:
re.compile(r"(?:.*V-1\\ZDS\\R\\EMBO-20-\d.*)(:\d*\w.*)")
Once I filter down the list, I use the following function to return the difference between the two sets:
funcDiff = lambda x, y: list((set(x)- set(y))) + list((set(y)- set(x)))
Is there a way to take the list of differences and filter out the ones that have matching values after the

as mentioned above?
I apologize is this is an obvious answer, I'm new to Python and Regex!
The output I get is the differences between the entire strings, so even if the first and last part of the string match, if the number following the 'EMBO-20-x' doesn't also match, it returns it as being different.
Before discussing your question, regex101 is an incredibly useful tool for this type of thing.
Your issue stems from two issues:
1.) The way you used .*
2.) Greedy vs. Nongreedy matches
.* kinda sucks
.* is a regex expression that is very rarely what you actually want.
As a quick aside, a useful regex expression is [^c]* or [^c]+. These expressions match any character except the letter c, with the first expression matching 0 or more, and the second matched 1 or more.
.* will match all characters as many times as it can. Instead, try to start your regex patterns with more concrete starting points. Two good ways to do this are lookbehind expressions and anchors.
Another quick aside, it's likely that you are misusing regex.match and regex.find. match will only return a match that begins at the start of the string, while find will return matches anywhere in the input string. This could be the reason you included the .* in the first place, to allow a .match call to return a match deeper in the string.
Lookbehind Expressions
There are more complete explanations online, but in short, regex patterns like:
(?<=test)foo
will match the text foo, but only if test is right in front of it. To be more clear, the following strings will not match that regex:
foo
test-foo
test foo
but the following string will match:
testfoo
This will only match the text foo, though.
Anchors
Another option is anchors. ^ and $ are special characters, matching the start and end of a line of text. If you know your regex pattern will match exactly one line of text, start it with ^ and end it with $.
Leading patterns with .* and ending with .* are likely the source of your issue. Although you did not include full examples of your input or your code, you likely used match as opposed to find.
In regex, . matches any character, and * means 0 or more times. This means that for any input, your pattern will match the entire string.
Greedy vs. Non-Greedy qualifiers
The second issue is related to greediness. When your regex patterns have a * in them, they can match 0 or more characters. This can hide problems, as entire * expressions can be skipped. Your regex is likely matched several lines of text as one match, and hiding multiple records in a single .*.
The Actual Answer
Taking all of this in to consideration, let's assume that your input data looks like this:
V-1\ZDS\R\EMBO-20-1:24
V-1\ZDS\R\EMBO-20-6:24
V-1\ZDS\R\EMBO-20-3:93
V-1\ZDS\R\EMBO-20-6:22309
V-1\ZDS\R\EMBO-20-8:2238

A better regular expression would be:
^V-1\\ZDS\\R\\EMBO-20-\d:(\d+)$

There are several differences I would like to highlight:
Starting the expression with ^ and ending with $. This forces the regex to match exactly one line. Even though the pattern works without these characters, it's good practice when working with regex to be as explicit as possible.
No useless non-capturing group. Your example had a (?:) group at the start. This denotes a group that does not capture it's match. It's useful if you want to match a subpattern multiple times ((?:ab){5} matches ababababab without capturing anything). However, in your example, it did nothing :)
Only capturing the number. This makes it easier to extract the value of the capture groups.
No use of *, one use of +. + works like *, but it matches 1 or more. This is often more correct, as it prevents 'skipping' entire characters.

python regex, capturing a pattern with trimming repeated subpattern in string

Here is a list of input strings:
"collect_project_stage1_20220927_foot60cm_arm70cm_height170cm_......",
"collect_project_version_1_0927_foot60cm_height170cm_......",
"collect_project_ver1_20220927_arm70cm_height170cm_......",
These input strings are provided by many different users.
Leading "collect_" is fixed, and then follows "${project_version}" which doesn't have hard rule to set this variable, the naming will be very different by different users.
Then, there will be repeating "${part}${length}cm_.......", but the number of repeatence is not fixed.
I'd like to capture the the variable ${project_version}.
Then, I try using the following re.match to capture it.
re.match(r'collect_(.*)_(?:(?:foot|arm|height)\d+cm_)+.*' , string)
However, the result is not as expected.
Is there anyone give me a hint that what's wrong in my regular expression?
Assuming you were only planning to capture the part preceding the various cm suffixed components, the reason you're capturing so many of them instead of just checking and discarding them is that regexes are greedy by default.
You can narrow your capture group to only match what you really expect (e.g. just a name followed by a date), replacing (.*) with something like ((?:[a-z]+[0-9]*_)*\d{8}).
Alternatively, you can be lazy and enable non-greedy matching for the capture group, changing (.*) to (.*?) where the ? says to only take the minimal amount required to satisfy the regex. The latter is more brittle, but if you really can't impose any other restrictions on the expression for the capture group, it's what you've got.
Use a non-greedy quantifier. Otherwise, the capture group will match as far as it can, so it will keep going until the last match for (?:foot|arm|height)\d+cm_).

The regex "(.*)" will capture far too much.

Python regex: how to achieve this complex replacement rule?

I'm working with long strings and I need to replace with '' all the combinations of adjacent full stops . and/or colons :, but only when they are not adjacent to any whitespace. Examples:
a.bcd should give abcd
a..::.:::.:bcde.....:fg should give abcdefg
a.b.c.d.e.f.g.h should give abcdefgh
a .b should give a .b, because . here is adjacent to a whitespace on its left, so it has not to be replaced
a..::.:::.:bcde.. ...:fg should give abcde.. ...:fg for the same reason
Well, here is what I tried (without any success).
Attempt 1:
s1 = r'a.b.c.d.e.f.g.h'
re.sub(re.search(r'[^\s.:]+([.:]+)[^\s.:]+', s1).group(1), r'', s1)
I would expect to get 'abcdefgh' but what I actually get is r''. I understood why: the code
re.search(r'[^\s.:]+([.:]+)[^\s.:]+', s1).group(1)
returns '.' instead of '\.', and thus re.search doesn't understand that it has to replace the single full stop . rather than understanding '.' as the usual regex.
Attempt 2:
s1 = r'a.b.c.d.e.f.g.h'
re.sub(r'([^\s.:]*\S)[.:]+(\S[^\s.:]*)', r'\g<1>\g<2>', s1)
This doesn't work as it returns a.b.c.d.e.f.gh.
Attempt 3:
s1 = r'a.b.c.d.e.f.g.h'
re.sub(r'([^\s.:]*)[.:]+([^\s.:]*)', r'\g<1>\g<2>', s1)
This works on s1, but it doesn't solve my problem because on s2 = r'a .b' it returns a b rather than a .b.
Any suggestion?
There are multiple problems here. Your regex doesn't match what you want to match; but also, your understanding of re.sub and re.search is off.
To find something, re.search lets you find where in a string that something occurs.
To replace that something, use re.sub on the same regular expression instead of re.search, not as well.
And, understand that re.sub(r'thing(moo)other', '', s1) replaces the entire match with the replacement string.
With that out of the way, for your regex, it sounds like you want
r'(?<![\s.:])[.:]+(?![\s.:])' # updated from comments, thanks!
which contains a character class with full stop and colon (notice how no backslash is necessary inside the square brackets -- this is a context where dot and colon do not have any special meaning1), repeated as many times as possible; and lookarounds on both sides to say we cannot match these characters when there is whitespace \s on either side, and also excluding the characters themselves so that there is no way for the regex engine to find a match by applying the + less strictly (it will do its darndest to find a match if there is a way).
Now, the regex only matches the part you want to actually replace, so you can do
>>> import re
>>> s1 = 'name.surname#domain.com'
>>> re.sub(r'(?<![\s.:])[.:]+(?![\s.:])', r'', s1)
'namesurname#domaincom'
though in the broader scheme of things, you also need to know how to preserve some parts of the match. For the purpose of this demonstration, I will use a regular expression which captures into parenthesized groups the text before and after the dot or colon:
>>> re.sub(r'(.*\S)[.:]+(\S.*)', r'\g<1>\g<2>', s1)
'name.surname#domaincom'
See how \g<1> in the replacement string refers back to "whatever the first set of parentheses matched" and similarly \g<2> to the second parenthesized group.
You will also notice that this failed to replace the first full stop, because the .* inside the first set of parentheses matches as much of the string as possible. To avoid this, you need a regex which only matches as little as possible. We already solved that above with the lookarounds, so I will leave you here, though it would be interesting (and yet not too hard) to solve this in a different way.
1 You could even say that the normal regex language (or syntax, or notation, or formalism) is separate from the language (or syntax, or notation, or formalism) inside square brackets!

Python regex find all matches

I'm using python 2.7 re library to find all numbers written in scientific form in a string. I'm using the following code:

print y
However, the output is only ['8.25e+07'] while I'm expecting something like [('8.25e+07'),(8.26206e+07)]. I've been trying around but couldn't find where the problem is. If I input y = re.findall(".([0-9]+\.[0-9]+[eE][-+]?[0-9]+).","|8.26206e+07}") then it gives ['8.26206e+07'] so the pattern is matching the second number but I don't get it why it doesn't match both at the same time.
You are slightly overcomplicating your regex by misusing the . which matches any character while not actually needing it and using a capturing group () without really using it.
With your pattern you are looking for a number in scientific notation which has to be BOTH preceded and followed by exactly one character.
{8.25e+07|8.26206e+07}
[--------]
After re.findall traverses your string from the beginning it finds your defined pattern, which then drops the { and the | because of your capturing group (..) and saves this as a match. It then continues but only has 8.26206e+07} left. That now does not satisfy your pattern, because it is missing one "any" character for your first ., and no further match is found. Note that findall only looks for non-overlapping matches[1].
To illustrate, change your input string by duplicating your separator |:
>>> p = ".([0-9]+\.[0-9]+[eE][-+]?[0-9]+)."
>>> s = "{8.25e+07||8.26206e+07}"
>>> print(re.findall(p, s))
['8.25e+07', '8.26206e+07']
To satisfy your two .s you need two separators between any two numbers.
Two things I would change in your pattern, (1) remove the .s and (2) remove your capturing group ( ), you have no need for it:
p = "[0-9]+\.[0-9]+[eE][-+]?[0-9]+"
Capturing groups can be very useful if you need to refer to specific captured groups again later, but your task at hand has no need for them.

Because findall is documented to
... Return all non-overlapping matches of pattern in string, as a list of strings.
But your patterns overlap: the leading . of the second match would have to be the | character, but that was already consumed by the trailing . of the first match.
Just remove those non-captured .s at the start and end of your regex.

When you use regular expressions to match. The default mode will be to find all non-overlapping matches. Using the dots at both the end and the beginning, you make them overlap.
"([0-9]+\.[0-9]+[eE][-+]?[0-9]+)"

Pattern for '.' separated words with arbitrary number of whitespaces

It's the first time that I'm using regular expressions in Python and I just can't get it to work.
Here is what I want to achieve: I want to find all strings, where there is a word followed by a dot followed by another word. After that an unknown number of whitespaces followed by either (off) or (on). For example:
word1.word2 (off)
Here is what I have come up so far.
string_group = re.search(r'\w+\.\w+\s+[(\(on\))(\(off\))]', analyzed_string)
\w+ for the first word
\. for the dot
\w+ for the second word
\s+ for the whitespaces
[(\(on\))(\(off\))] for the (off) or (on)
I think that the last expression might not be doing what I need it to. With the implementation right now, the program does find the right place in the string, but the output of
string_group.group(0)

instead of the whole expression I'm looking for. Could you please give me a hint what I am doing wrong?
[ ... ] is used for character class, and will match any one character inside them unless you put a quantifier: [ ... ]+ for one or more time.
But simply adding that won't work...
\w+\.\w+\s+[(\(on\))(\(off\))]+
Will match garbage stuff like word1.word2 )(fno(nofn too, so you actually don't want to use a character class, because it'll match the characters in any order. What you can use is a capturing group, and a non-capturing group along with an OR operator |:
\w+\.\w+\s+(\((?:on|off)\))
(?:on|off) will match either on or off
Now, if you don't like the parentheses, to be caught too in the first group, you can change that to:
\w+\.\w+\s+\((on|off)\)
You've got your logical OR mixed up.
[(\(on\))(\(off\))]
should be
\((?:on|off)\)
[]s are just for matching single characters.
The square brackets are a character class, which matches any one of the characters in the brackets. You appear to be trying to use it to match one of the sub-regexes (\(one\)) and (\(two\)). The way to do that is with an alternation operation, the pipe symbol: (\(one\)|\(two\)).
I think your problem may be with the square brackets []
they indicate a set of single characters to match. So your expression would match a single instance of any of the following chars: "()ofn"
So for the string "word1.word2 (on)", you are matching only this part: "word1.word2 ("
Try using this one instead:
re.search(r'\w+\.\w+\s+\((on|off)\)', analyzed_string)
This match assumes that the () will be there, and looks for either "on" or "off" inside the parenthesis.
